I haven't yet had a chance to go to a show, but I wondering how much people generally spend at a convention on coins? Mandy
I normally bring what ever cash I am willing to spend and a few rolls of 90% silver in case I find something that makes me spend more.
If it's a small local show I generally only spend between $200-300. If it's a show I have to travel to and can spend a few days at, I'll take $1000 cash and if I need more most dealers are capable of accepting debit cards at shows these days. If my wife is with me I never go over $500 or she expects me to spend double that on something for her that isn't coin related. Guy
The first show I took 800. 600 for coins and 200 for walking around money. My last show I ended up spending more than I should have. From here on out I think I'll take about 500-700 and just look for that one nice coin.
We only have one show a year in my location. If I'm around for the show, I usually spend between $500-$1,000.
Doesn' t that depend on what type of show it is? There is a small local show around here where you can walk out with spending very little. There is a show about 20 minutes from here once a month. From what I saw there were pristine coins in cases but there were also dealers with just a couple rows of coins and those with tubs of coins not displayed you can root through. I bought 3 lower grade coins I wanted for $8. I also wasn't looking to spend much since I already spent my coin budget on Ebay and a local shop.
lol I think that sums it up nicely for all of us. I could spend a million dollars at a large coin show, and still see two million more of what I want. I should have been born a billionaire I guess. Guy
The bi-monthly expo, I usually take $300 with me. The annual show, $500. I typically spend about $150 at either.
When the average coin that you collect is 650+ ya need to take a couple of grand with you. Though there are many times I've left with nothing and there are times when I didn't have enough
When I go to a coin shop I typically take $200-300 with me. When I go to coin shows I'll take $500-600. I typically try to stay in the $100-200 range as far as what I actually spend. But I take extra just in case I come across that deal of a lifetime.
Every one I have been to has an ATM near by. So instead of taking a large amount of cash, I take a couple of hundred is all. If I see something that's more, I give the dealer a hundred on deposit and tell them I am going to the ATM for the balance.
I bring all I can afford to bring. Though it isn't some of these adults with jobs, but I typically bring 150-200 to shows.
Doesn't matter how much you bring (as already mentioned, it never feels like enough) but it does matter how much you leave behind for what you are taking away. Know your coins and how you arrive at their values. Have the discipline to follow that information and resist knee-jerk reactions or the tendency to justify stretching beyond your own budget's comfort zone just to acquire something. Equally important, buy the best your money can buy. Don't settle for second best because you were coerced into believing a line that a piece was a bargain or of a higher grade if not for x, y, or z features supressing the asking price for the item.
