    Panama Pill Coin

The Panama coin is 1.25 grams and 10 mm diameter. It is thick like the US quarter but small diameter (3 mm smaller than a US gold dollar). It is pill shaped.

    Maundy coins cosist of a 1d, 2d, 3d and 4d .

The Maundy coins are detailed below. The size and design of the coins and also the reverse have not changed since 1822.

    1 penny ---- Weight 0.5 grams. Diameter 11 millimetres.

    2 pence ---- Weight 0.9 grams. Diameter 13 millimetres.

    3 pence ---- Weight 1.4 grams. Diameter 16 millimetres.

    4 pence ---- Weight 1.9 grams. Diameter 18 millimetres.

The original coins were 0.925 silver. The fineness was reduced to 0.500 in 1921.Then in 1947 all silver was removed from everyday coinage.Cupronical was then used.Maundy money however was restored at that time to silver fineness of 0.925 which is still being used today.

The obverses of the coinage changed according to the reigning monarch.

    MAUNDY COINS - Obverses

1822-1830 .Left-facing head of King George 1V. GEORGIUS 1111 D G BRITANNIAR REX F D .( GEORGE 1V by the grace of god king of britain, defender of the faith )

All maundy sets of this reign use Pistruccis bust of the monarch.

The bust of the 1822 3d is the same size as that on the 2d.The first dies of the 3d broke and there was not enough time to reproduce the die.

The dies for the Reverse were produced by Jean Baptiste Merlen.

1831-1837 .Right-facing head of King William 1V. GULIELMUS 1111 D G BRITANNIAR REX F D.( WILLIAM 1V by the grace of god king of britain, defender of the faith )

William Wyon engraving for the bust was used.

The Reverse was designed by Merlen.

1838 - 1887 .Left-facing "Young Head" of Queen Victoria. VICTORIA D G BRITANNIAR REGINA F D .( VICTORIA by the grace of god queen of britain, defender of the faith)

German Pfaltz, 1625 Half Batzen, silver, roughly 9mm...

    AND

German, 1624 Ein (1) Kreuzer, silver, roughly 8mm...

I also have a 17** German Heller that is smaller than these 2, and probably a much finer silver, but I can't find my pics of it. I would guess it is roughly 7mm. The Heller also has a much more modern look. These 2 appear to be hammered, where the Heller was definitely done with a die press.

    EDIT:
I am guessing on these measurements.
I should probably rethink these guesses, because the pic of the 11mm coin tells me that these 2 coins pictured are probably actually larger than I guessed them to be. Sorry. The 11mm coin next to the dime is about where these coins are... So they must be about 10mm and 11mm. That would make the Heller no smaller than 9mm.

If you are Filipino, FILIPINO POWER!!! My grandma said that Magellan liked my greatx12 grandma so my greatx12 grandpa killed him. Not sure if that's true though..... My smallest coin is a roosevelt dime.

Another small coin that I got the other day: a Netherlands Antilles 1 cent piece from 2008. It is not so much the size alone (Ø 14 mm) that conveys the "tiny" impression, but rather the combination of the diameter and the composition: This is an aluminum piece. :)

(Same type as mine, image worldcoingallery.com.) Interestingly, even though the coin is so small and light, it has a reeded edge ...
