I think their currency is struck at a private mint like Franklin. This S1000 (Shilling) is worth about 62c USD...........and it's only selling for $299?????????

    Somaliland shilling
The Somaliland shilling is the official currency of Somaliland, a self-declared republic that is internationally recognized as an autonomous region of Somalia.[5] The currency is not recognized as legal tender by the international community, and it currently has no official exchange rate.

Probably minted by another country and is then sold to dealers. The profit from the sale is probably the only think going to the government of somalia. Probably could goodle who makes them.

It's a one ounce silver round. Still, $300 is expensive, and I thought the US Mint was being greedy..

I thought Somaliland was as Chris said, a region in somalia, along with the puntland? Or is it a seperate country?

According to my Standard catalog of world coins Somali is comprised of the former Italian Somaliland who's capital is Mogadishu. Somaliland is just west of somalia and is comprised of the former British Somaliland and who's capatil is Hargeysa.

One of the reason I enjoy worldcoins is looking them up in my Krause catalog and reading the short discription they have of each country.

Thanks...i heard that the italian government was granted partial territory of somalia in 1950 or so by the UN, and in 1960 it released it to the somalian government, can all or any of this be confirmed?

it appears a civil war erupted in the late 1970's and continued until the Northern Somali national movement declared a secession of the Somaliland republic on May 17, 1991 which was not recognized by the Somali Democratic republic. Somaliland continued to use Somalia's currency until 1995 when they started issuing there own currency.

The very first coin from Somaliland, 1 Shilling 1994, was minted at the Pobjoy Mint in England.
According to Wikipedia no coins are currently minted and/or circulating in Somaliland.
