Kennedy Half Dollar with missing chunk of cheek?

My dad found this coin in his collection - any thoughts on what caused it, how common it is and if it has any value??

Looks like a chunk of the die was missing before that was struck.

 

If a chunk of the die was missing, it would be raised, not recessed. It could have been a strikethrough, but I'd like to see a close-up of the same position on the reverse, first.
