It's hard for me to get to my local coin store because they close at 6 p.m. and I get home about 6:30, but today we got off from work at noon so I made a trip. I'm sure glad I did. They had a book of world coins they had bought off of someone and they gave it to me to look at when I asked to see world coins. It was a mix of common coins along with some that I've never seen before. I didn't know what they were going to charge me so at first I was kind of hesitant with what I picked out, but when they just charged me 50 cents apiece, I went back for seconds. I'm still wishing I had bought others. I like coins from obscure places and places that no longer exist, which is why most of these stick out to me. The guys at this store don't collect world coins so I got some great deals. Among the coins I got: 1903 Guadaloupe 50 centimes - Valued at $35 in VF 1926 Greenland 25 and 50 ore - $7 and $9.50 in VF. These always sell for high prices on eBay and I always wanted one because it has a polar bear on it, and you may have guessed I like polar bears. 1939 Albania 1 lek Italian occupation - $2.50 in VF. I like wartime issues like this. 1931 Estonia 10 senti - $2 in F 1906-11 Hyderabad 1/2 anna - date uncertain, not worth a lot but unusual. 1941 Lebanon 2 1/2 piastres emergency coinage - $1.50 1913 Montenegro 2 pare - $4. 1937 Mongolia 2 mongo - $3.50 1935 San Marino 10 centesimi - $1.50 1937 Sarawak 1 cent - $1.50 1937 Euzkadi (Spain) 1 and 2 pesetas - $2.50 and $3. 1918 Tibet 5 skar - $2. 1956 Togo 5 francs - $6. 1913 Malta (Britain) 1/3 farthing - $2.50 1891 German East Africa 1 pesa - $1. 1866 Papal States 1 lira - $4. 1891 British North Borneo 1/2 cent - $6. 1897 S. Africa 1 shilling - $4. 1898 E. Africa Protectorate 1 pice - $4. 1804 Sumatra 1 keping - I haven't found this in Krause yet. 1821 St. Helena half penny - $10. These are just some of the coins I got. I'm excited about getting such unusual coins as much as I am about the deal, but without the deal I never could have gotten the coins.
Sweet man. Any time you can pick up especially Greenland for cheap like that you hit a score. I have noticed the crazy prices they bring on Ebay for some reason. Sounds like a great trip. I had a great trip to Harlan Berk's two weeks ago. Let's just say the highlights were I held about 10 million dollars of coins in my hands in a one hour period, and got to hold a piece of Philip II's royal dinnerware, yeah, I held a wine cup Alexander the Great grew up drinking out of.
Some really nice coins you got. And at fifty cents a piece I would have bought all of them, seriously, I mean ALL of them.
Thanks. I visited Harlan Berk for the first time a few weeks ago. It's close to where I work but again, their hours correspond to my work hours. I plan to go back in the future. The only problem for me with them is they know what their stuff is worth.
Some of them were rather common coins I already have, but the ones I wish I would have bought were from various Indian states. I don't know much about those coins but from a little that I saw in Krause most of them seem to fetch a better than average price. Overall I bought about 50 coins from this book.
Actually among the coins was a Massachusetts pine tree shilling. I said to the coin store employee "I know this is a fake." Now I'm thinking I should have just bought it if they'd have charged 50 cents. What if it was real?
The real store for ancients and offices are upstairs on the 13th floor. Its all ancients and artifacts. You have to go to the coin store and let them know you wish to see ancients and they can announce you are going up. No displays, you tell them what you are interested in and they can bring some out.
Awesome coins you found Hiddendragon! Good for you! Enjoy your beauts and take pride in them! Keep up the good work!
