I am sure about the off-center strike and the woody part, but can that also be a clip I see or just a side affect of the strike? Sellers pictures, not mine, but I did manage to win it CHEAP!
Looks like a clip to me, but it may not be a woodie. Those could be roller striations which are visible on the un-struck portion of the coin due to the lack of strike. When you get the coin check to see if the lines extend into the devices or not, from the pictures it looks like they don't, but it's tough to tell.
WOW! Super cool coin! The clip looks legit but better pictures would be required, especially of the edge.
What a steal! I find this coin extremely interesting. My guess is 80-81 since the wood toning like that seems to happen pretty often. The interesting part is the lines don't really seem to show on the struck part. I'm wondering if the striking process "melds" the surface impurities enough that the wood doesn't show when the coin tones down. I'm looking forward to your pictures and observations.
I am pretty sure I can see them on the obverse, but I am not at all sure about the reverse. It was not mailed until the 5th, so I probably won't see it until next week.
The coin arrived today. Yes, I believe it is a woody. I do not see any lines on the reverse, but they are on the obverse. They are faint, but as thin as that end is, I am not surprised. The stripes are due to alloy mixing and pressing a coin that thin would definitely mix the alloy more. Obviously, it is an off center strike. However, I do not believe it is a clip. If you look closely at my picture of the reverse, you can tell the area by the "clip" is raised. i.e., it is a bump. Now that I know what to look for, I can see it in the seller's picture also.
AH-HA! VERY interesting, no wood on coined part. That seems to confirm my theory about the dirty planchet rollers lightly impregnating the surface with contaminants. Definately NOT a clip, that's some sort of damage IMO. Not sure if it happened at the mint or not, but it doesn't have the characteristics of a clip.
