the story behind this is, i bought it from an older woman whos grand father was a fisherman .in a small island settlement off the coast of newfoundland. apparently. fish buyers from the united states would come to port and 1893americangoldcoin001.jpg buy fish to bring back to the united states and would pay for the cath with american gold pieces. i ussually collect only newfoundland and canada coins but i couldnt pass up the deal that i got on this coin. it was in a silk cloth and passed down over the generations. any info on mint number, grade and value would be nice. also is it worth sending off to be graded. as there are no grading companies in newfoundland where i live. thank you so much. as i always learn something new when i post on this site.having a hard time loading the pics

Rev. looks really great, Obv seems to have a few nicks :rollling: It's a nice $5 but considered a common date because of the higher mintage. If you got it for a really good price, hold onto it, I think the price of gold will really go up after Jan 2013.

Mintage is 1,528,120. Can you measure the diameter of the piece? It should measure 21.6 mm across. The reverse looks clean, but the image is really too small to get a good take on it. The obverse shot is spectacular. Those bubble like depressions on the obverse bother me somewhat. My take is AU-50/55

as for cleaning . i just got this coin today. it wasnt touched if iut was cleaned it might have been years ago. . i have seen coins on ebay graded by pcgs where you can see small layers of dirt in areas that looked cleaned and graded pretty high. this is where im abit confused and new. so all feed back accepted and respected. thanks so much. so basically its only gold value if im reading correct round about i paid 300.00 for it

the pics were taken with a phone and i took several. so some look darker than others even with the photos taken of the same side. so i guess lighting and quality of the photos isnt the best. but i took as close up as i could with out really distorting the photos.

god im horrible at taking photos . the phone camera was picking up the photo and lightening it up . please excuse the fingers as i recieved this today on an impulse buy . this is how i took a pic of the side. i know some people dont agree on it. but however. if someone would not buy a coin that has ever been handled well i guess coins from the mint would be thats all that would be in ones collection..

yes i just looked closeup with a loop. the r has a raise on it. it isnt a scratch from what i can see. why is that a problem?

It's an odd occurrence. Normally I'd say it was a die crack but most of those occur in the fields of the coin. I hope someone more knowledgeable will check in to describe what it might be.

8.23 -8.24 grams. and the diameter is right. as well the marks are alot more slight to the look of an eye. than what the detailed pic shows...i almost have to take the photo with a proper camera, instead of this bloody phone with which you can get different shading depending on each photo taken... all in all its a beautiful coin. sad that some people, destroy coins from different countrys just for melt value. i just bought a large number of silver coins. united states of america ,filipenneas.. listed them a few days ago on ebay.. i dont know much about those as well. got them all at an estate sale the weekend past. but my focus is on newfoundland coins and canada...name on ebay is nlpicker18.. ussually sell what i dont collect or have multiples of.

Beautiful gold coin. I'd say mid range like an AU55 maybe even an AU58 but that's pushing it. The R is gonna beat it down. May be the only thing bad to it tho'. You can not gauge your coin to a lousy graded MS62 off of ebay. That will only make you angry. Look at the other MS62's, your's is super nice but not a 62.
