My Kennedy lust has taken over. Last night, I went crazy on Mott's sale and auctions, and had my sniper rifle out--got 58 Kennedys that are raw--Gem BU MS and proofs of many dates. Figured since I do have lots of raw Kennedys, I also got myself a Dansco Kennedy "complete with proofs" album. So, for the time being, back to raw collection for me!! This is exciting, since I have not done mass raw buying in years and years!!! Wahoooooo. Will post pictures of the new coins when they arrive, plus some of the lots of the toner Kennedys--there is the start of a complete set coming!
YES!!!! Another freed coin. I shall now start calling you "The Liberator". I think the word of TPGs, and I think that they are great for the hobby. But I like to album collect also, so my slabs usually get cracked.
I won't crack out the really good date Kennedys that I have had for a while. I don't mind having duplicates, and love to watch them tone in the Dansco--want the full P, D, and S set, with proofs, and silver proofs---have about half of it already! My only limitation of this set is that the coins all have to be good solid BUs and Gems, as I want a pretty set. Willing to be patient.
That is the best way to go about it Liberator, I recently bought a complete set off of ebay. Although the coins were MS and proof, the quality left plenty to be desired. I will likely upgrade 25-30 coins in the album at some point. For now, I am a bit disappointed with the set. but that's what happens with my lack of patience.
Collecting them RAW is a good way to realize just how lousy quality control at the mint was for many years and how rare some of the higher graded coins in the series are.
Breaking a slab open has gotta be like not wearing underwear... of which I don't have the guts to do either... Slabs just look to pretty and you never know when a wet fart will creap up on you...
Welcome to the darkside! I am onto my third MS Kennedy Dansco. I really like the Kennedy series and the hunt to find high quality raw ones. It's not always easy, but it happens. I'll just leave this here. The first one I bought (72 mint set) when I purchased the Dansco. My birth year.
This is so true LindeDad. Especially the early-mid 80's. I was shocked at some of the halves that were in mint sets. Eek.
Between buying that lot of "toner Kennedys," and the large lot from Mott, I am ready to do dark side for Kennedy Halves. My only requirement is that they be at least solid MS BU-Gem for the MS, and nice cameo proofs. Making an offer on common date Dansco album, and if I get it, will have the set almost complete with all BU and toned coins. Feels good---you should have told me sooner. I love that 1972 coin---gorgeous and high grade!
Speaking of those "toners" you bought from that seller...I went in and bought all the rest he had on there after you. After you said he worked with you on the offers, I decided to low-ball him to death. I put in $2 offer on everything, and he went for it. I think there were 12 or so. There were 2 he had listed for way too much that I passed though.
I am glad you got some good stuff--that is exactly the route I took with him--$2 and $3 on everything, and it came out fine. Some of the toners are actually rather nice, and will do in the Dansco. They are not slab material as they are common dates, so it is perfect for a mid grade album. Glad you were able to work with him--I did get some nice stuff from him, although his pictures were a wee bit more toned than some of the coins. A few of the others have nice rainbow, and will tone even more in the album. Glad it worked!!!
Well, just found an 88 coin Kennedy set in original mint cellophane packaging, that looks great for my Dansco. All 88 1964-2011 P and D coins. Between this and the other lots, it is going to be great fun assembling a high quality set. Great price on all 88!! A sample of the 88 coins in mint bags!
I don't understand this mint bag deal. Mint bags were all one date and mint mark per bag. Or did you actually buy 88 bags of Kennedy's?
It is a mint cellophane wrap of every single P and D date--88 different coins in bags. All the basic JFK coins! Somebody had a collection of every basic P and D Kennedy from 1964-2011 in a binder, each coin in individual mint bags.
Awwww, it will be fun assembling a nice high level MS set. I saw this at a reasonable price on auction, and pulled the trigger. The best coins go in the Dansco.
I am well aware of that--you know that I meant packaged in mint packaging. Did you honestly think I bought a United States Mint Bag????????????
Collect Kennedy half dollars, Save your money, buy "bald headed" Franklins - they are real coins
