Nice coin. What going on around the second 8? I'd go AU58.

    I agree !
AU58 details scratched ( ziggy zaggy scratch between 8 and 3 in date )

Looks like some idle hands used a pin on that area for some dumb reason. :bart:

Might not even grade depending upon what the scratching is all about.

That's what I was thinking. If scratches, damaged, no grade.

    AU details, scratched.

How can it be Au? I see no signs of wear.

Nope, I see scratches. It doesn't even grade AU with those scratches. It's damaged goods if you ask me.

MS details. The weakness in the hairline looks like wear, but it is from strike. Look at the stars directly adjacent to that area.

The fact you have to apologize for picture quality opens you up for some negative feedback. They seem fine to me, I would go 55 details.

    This is a PCGS AU53:

and OP`s coin doesn't look better than this one (IF it is indeed weak strike and not hair wear on OPs coin, also obverse starts at 11 and 12 o'clock look worn).

Can't judge luster, and need to. Could be AU, could be MS.

With the photos, I can't get a good look at the luster. If the luster is intact, the coin has MS details...if there are luster breaks it has AU details. That said, this coin is not gradable IMHO due to the scratches around the date. This is why it gets a "details" grade.

It would be a keeper if it wasn't for the scratches. The eye is attracted to that area right away killing all eye appeal. If you're selling it, get what you can for it. It ain't gonna grade and wouldn't be worth the expense.

I think the scratches were probably the result of someone trying to take something off the surface and damaging it further by doing so.

I do not agree that these two coins would have the same grade. the OP coin is a better example and if there is no luster I would bet at least 55 if not 58. The hair and stars do not look the same between the two IMO.

If the luster is there, I would give it a 63 if not for the damage.

Wanted to add. Nice image. I would have loaded it to the bucket in a larger size.
