Just got a $20 note from ATM today - 1977 star with serial 00093855. Is this a relatively low serial, or not so much. Had not seen the old $20's in a while so just curious. thanks! color is different because I changed scan settings. note is in decent shape..a few wrinkles but nothing major. Let me know what you think.
Welcome to Coin Talk ark1974. Most hard core collectors consider a four zero start (or lower) to be a low serial number. What is the prefix letter of your 1977 $20 star, and are you able to provide any photos or scans so forum members can try to evaluate the condition of your new acquisition ? Small head $20's are getting harder to find in circulation, and usually they are not in very good condition.
Yes, as Steve has suggested, post pictures/scans. That is an awesome find by the way! Small head $20's are indeed hard to find, but small head $20 stars are even tougher to find. For a star note, as Steve has also said, 5 digits it not low, 4 of lower would be considered low. I can't wait to see pictures/scans of this. Excellent catch!:thumb:
Wow! Normally my fear/hope is that everytime i draw $20 from an ATM it is a star note, but I would never dream of getting a series 1977 note to boot. I'd love to see pictures as well.
Nice catch! I got a series 1990 $20 star from an ATM, about a year ago. Those small heads are out there, but hard to find in circ....especailly fom an ATM.
Not only is it a 1977 $20 star note, but it's on Minneapolis, which is the rarest star for that series (only 512,000 printed). S&L gives a book value of $200 in CU, as compared to $70-$125 for the other eleven districts. Obviously this note isn't CU, but at least that's a point of reference to work from.... Incredible circulation find!
Any advice? So I am a VERY casual coin, stamp, and now note collector. What do you guys think is my best avenue going forward: hold on to it, e-bay, look for local collector? Any advice would be great. thanks!
Being a short run star I would definatly keep it...you can reference it to being your first pieace of rock cocaine cause this currency hobby can become very addicting.
You couldn't have put it more "bluntly" (haha), it is indeed an addiction problem for me. Too bad they don't have addiction treatment centers for collecting. Time after time, I have tried to stop collecting, so I can invest in other assets, but somehow I always get sucked right back into it when I get a good bill or something. Collecting currency is definitely my "rock cocaine". I guess it's better than the real thing though. I admit I have an addictive personality and if it weren't bills, it'd just be something else...
Hold on to it if you like it and can spare $20 for the time being. As for ebay do some research. How much has a similar example sold for AFTER fees. A local collector, in theory, is the best but finding one is difficult. If you choose that route be cafeful.
