I have posted this in the past but never got a definative answer...so I will try it again. Please give your opinion.

I found this coin a number of years ago in a bag of wheat cents. It's extremely beat up...but do you think it's a 1914-D or a 1914-S or is it a fake. Please give me your opinions.

You need an "It's genuine" option in your poll, because I have no clue as to whether it's a D, S, or maybe even a P, but I can tell you one thing...

It looks like a genuine Lincoln Wheat Cent. ;)

Looks like an S to me, you can kinda see the tail of it where it's a little bit of a lighter shade.

Just my 2 cents... or one, for this case.

My original thoughts were an S as well...and it was an a 1914-S labeled 2x2 for years. But, the more I looked at it, the more I started to wonder. If looks like the shape and placement of a D to me. I know that in this condition, it's not going to be worth much, but it would be nice if it were a D.

The remains of the letter are more filled out suggesting more meat was on it in the first place - S would be more likely.

Personally I would label it an S. Its clearly a mintmark, but since one is clearly more valuable than the other I always error on the side of caution.

Like the old saying, "when you hear hoof beats, think of horses not zebras". Way too many zebra sitings in this hobby if something is not definitively one way or the other. :)

Not my best thing ever, but I'm not on my Mac, so...

The red line on there shows my opinion on the bottom tail of the "S".

    What do ya'll think?

If it had the 14D die crack at the base of the bust or there was another way to attribute it perhaps you could make a call. Otherwise I'm in the genuine 1914 crowd. I don't think anybody can give you a definitive answer on what the mintmark, if any, is.

Genuine 1914 (undeterminable mintmark)? Yeah, I would be fine with that, though I believe its pretty conclusive there IS a mm there, just cannot tell which.

I don't know if there were mintmarks that high but I tweaked the image a little,
and I see almost a complete weak S as well as what you guys are contemplating below.

EDIT: But now looking at the originals .... I think the top one I saw is just a result of the image tweak. Sorry.

I'll agree that there appears to be a bump there that could be a mintmark.
