http://mintnewsblog.com/2012/06/circulating-quality-2012-s-el-yunque-national-forest-quarters/ the Mint are selling rolls and bags of non-proof "s" mint-marked quarters. I will keep a close eye on mintages with these- they may turn out to be something. http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...ick&langId=-1&catalogId=10001&ddkey=ClickInfo
Here are a few scenarios that might make this one a winner: 1. Mint stops selling them unexpectedly when next one is released or at end of year and mintage remains very low. This could lead to some short term profits for some. Likelihood: low to moderate. 2. A silver version or some cool variety is unexpected found. This would likely increase interest among collectors at least until supply is exhausted. Likelihood: low. 3. The ATB series catches fire with the general population like the SQ series did and demand dramatically increases as the Mint increases circulation of the series. Likelihood: snowball chance on a NYC sidewalk today at noon. I was going to pull the trigger today but purchased a silver Britannia needed for my set instead. :smile. TC
I'm with you on the Britannia, TC. They are great coins. I especially like the 1999 and 2009 releases with the chariot. The 2007 with the lion is good also.
I agree with you completely. The simplest thing they could do to generate interest in these and the pucks also is to release many of the ATB quarters into circulation, thus generating a cross-sell into these quarters and the pucks. This is not splitting the atom; it is simply Marketing 101. This is what private corporations do all the time and it is a foundation of their existence.
Unless an error is found, or the mintage is very low, they will be worth as much as the 2002 and on kennedy halves are worth... face value unless you find someone on ebay who want them.
When are the officials at the US Mint going to extricate their heads out of those dark orifices? They pulled this same stunt with the SQ Proof Sets. They didn't begin selling the SQ Proof Set individually until 2004 (?) so, if all you wanted to do was collect the SQ Proofs, the only way you could get the prior years was to buy the complete set. Now, they're selling these rolls of S-Mint ATB quarters after 10 have already been released. What a joke! Chris
Does anyone know of these are a one year issue due to the 75th anniversary of the SF MInt? or Is the Mint planning to continue these throughout the rest of the ATB series? TC
looks like mintage is lower than expected (at least according to mint news blog): "The opening sales figures for the circulating quality 2012-S El Yunque National Park Quarters are available within the latest weekly sales report. The numbers came in lower than I expected at 5,800 of the 40-coin rolls and 3,827 of the 100-coin bags. This accounts for 614,700 coins. Notably, this is lower than the debut figures experienced for the regular “P” and “D” mint marked bags and rolls. The US Mint seemed to be hoping that this product would make a big impression with collectors, but it seems to have fallen a bit flat." http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...cRiz9o%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc#ht_2117wt_1396
I'm probably going to wait until the end of the year when the last of the five coins is issued and i know for sure the mint doesn't have time to fire up the presses and pop out a few million more before the end of the calender year. If the end of the year comes and these still have a mintage of only 1,400,000 per issue i think these will be a good buy.
