I bought an album of wheat pennies this weekend and this was in it. I think it is a missing D variety????
Im not doubting you one bit here but im not seeing any D or any disturbance to the surface of the metal??? Would you classify it as a weak D???
I agree that it is not a recognized "missing D". Not only that, but that would rate as a weak "D" regardless. I can make out where the "D" should be.
I order to qualify as a "weak D", it must come from die pair #1, #3, or #4. Any other dies (or more commonly mis-attributed as Die pair #2) are either meaningless or out right fakes.
I see it too! Good eye RLM! EDIT: I meant to quote RLM's previous post about how he could make out the MM. oh well
There are known die characteristics for No D and weak D coins. There are 4 die pairs that made the "No D" cents and they each have their own traits. If they don't fit one of those, they aren't considered no D cents. Here is the specific info: http://lincolncentresource.com/1922Ddievarieties.html
i see what you are saying about not matching the other dies but how else did the D disappear? Do you think it just wore off or was intentionally ground off???
Here's what I see: Hope you don't mind, Mat, but I tinkered with your photos in order to make it more visible. The first one is just blown up with some white noise reduction. The second one is by shifting colors. The third one makes it appear that the smaller the image the more visible it is to the naked eye. Hope that helps!
Ok i can see what you are saying but i thought it might be here where i circled. Im not arguing with anyone i believe it to be either tinkered with or worn off?
Its just hard to think this coin is worn if you seen it in hand its remarkably lustrous and actually has some toning??? Just fishy is all and i thought i could have found something so i asked. Thank you everyone for letting me know whats up i learned a lot and am truly grateful for the knowledge.
you're welcome However, I feel kinda obligated to say that this coin is too damaged on the reverse and worn on the obverse to have retained any luster. Luster has a cartwheel effect, and what I can see in these photos looks more like an even shine. But these photos weren't meant to show luster or the lack thereof, so IDK for sure. still a nice 'weak D' :thumb:
I have read it and i have concluded mine is just worn from use as it does not have the die crack or the odd shaped O in ONE.
As a result, it can't be a true No D. In all likelihood, someone removed the D to try and pass it off as a authentic No D. There are a lot of those out there...unfortunately.
After looking at your photos and reviewing the links, I'm going with No D "weak" reverse Die #1. I don't see any evidence of a D. The twos look right and the TY in LIBERTY is strong which I like to see in No D's. IN GOD WE TRUST is a little stronger than usual but not so strong that I would say it is a 22 D with a removed D. Anyway, I would still put it in a safe place and not throw it over my shoulder just yet. Matt
Im not done with this coin it will be seen by PCGS at some point and will probably come back as a fake but theres always that 1% chance it could be real. It would probably be graded as damaged because of the beat up rim on the reverse???
