I don't see why they wouldn't grade. I don't believe that would be considered environmental damage.
    I'd go with VF20 on the 2/1
    and F12 on the 21.

Looks like some nice toning. Also, is that a D i see hiding in the toning on the reverse of the '21?

As I understand the TPG's evironmental damage policy as long as it's tone or tarnish that naturally occurs on silver it's fine. The things they look for is PVC, any harmful toning that is eating into (pitting) the silver, artificial coloring/toning, or if something got spilled or applied and stained the coin that color. Anything else should be fine and they would grade just not MS. Even if they did claim it as damaged the 42/1 might be worth just having it authenticated and detail graded.

cremebrule: yep, it's a 21 D. I had to scan them in to really see it.

Ok, these are both going off to pcgs tomorrow.

The 21-D graded AU50 and the 42/1 didn't grade do to PVC residue.

Soaked the 42/1 in 100% acetone and will resend this week.

I felt slightly bad as I submitted the 21 under the economy grading and it has a limit of $300. I guess they were feeling generous.

That thud you just heard was me throwing my ANA Grading Standards into the trash.

I hope (and expect) the acetone dip will take care of the PVC residue problem. If it does, and there isn't any detectible corrosion, you might well be looking at an MS grade for the 2/1, based on the grade they gave for the 21-D... :)

Congratulations! BTW, any good stories as to how you came by the coins? Cherrypicked?

Wow that's awesome. Now that I look at it again, the detail is definitely there. Congrats!

I've been sorting through and sending off for grading a coin collection which was handed down from my great grandfather, and grandfather. I was nearly (seriously low-balled) taken to the cleaners by a local dealer for it, and have become very grateful for this forum and the suggestions I've been given here. So far I've discovered individual coins that have realized much more than the dealer was offering for my whole collection.

I will be sending this coin off PCGS secure plus, just in case they were feeling extra generous and the toning looked good to them that day. I'd love to see an MS+ grade on this one for sure.
