I found it yesterday while metal detecting. Where do you recommend I get it graded. It's probably not worth sending it in to a grading service but not sure.
We don't. As Cazkaboom stated, and I agree with him, the coin has been cleaned and would get an XF details label because of the harsh cleaning. Really wouldn't be worth your expense.
There's a harsher cleaning that can be seen that someone, who had the dime before you, may have performed.
How do you tell? I found it at an old home site (since demolished) from the early 20's some 8" down. So if cleaning was done it was back then.
Not necessarily. No telling how long it had been in the ground there, and quite possibly could have been in the house that was demolished. There are some hairline scratches on both sides in the fields that can be indicative of using a brush to remove any tarnish, dirt, and/or grime.
I can"t see any hair line on the photo.:kewl: to say its cleaned but I am sure you wipe it off if it was found in a demolition site that maybe what there talking about?
As I said, I just ran it under water to get the dirt off. Maybe the scratches are caused from being in 'dirt' being that it is very abrasive? Every silver I have found have never had any toning, they have all been as 'shiny', just not with this ones detail. Maybe it's our soil type? Maybe coins found while MD are not going to be in the same shape as ones in general circulation?
It is tough for metal detecting finds to not get some sort of Details grade, whether it's enviromental for coppers, or something else. It's possible that using your thumb under tap water to scrub the dirt off was slightly abrasive. I'd just chalk it up as a great find, throw it in a 2x2 or something, and enjoy it.
Even though it's cleaned, the fact that it has XF details is amazing to me. Most other finds while digging in the ground that I hear about usually have AG-F details. Nice find!
Nice detail, and to find a 1907 Denver issue in Maryland soil is even cooler. May not be original surfaces, but I'd be proud to pull that out of the ground. :thumb:
I agree with Log Potato on the nice detail. I think the detail is too nice to be an XF though. I'm thinking AU53 cleaned. But, the little gal at the grocery store, the gas station guy and the veterinary assistant have all disagreed with me today on various topics, so what do I know?
