There is an old tradition for those of us who grew up poor in New York City, which is to go to 5th Avenue and window shop for all the things you can't afford and to record in your mind where all the great deals lay. So on the Subway this week, i was looking through my copy of Numismatic News, mostly useful for perusing the Comic Book like endless list of classified adds. Its a form of window shopping and I circled things that might be interesting and worth discussing. Of course the main problem with these advertisements is the issue of trust. You are essential buying coins site unseen. that means that the reputation of the dealer is paramount, and discussing such in the context of this forum might be quite useful. So on the subway, with a pen in hand, I casually circled some items that might be of interest to me or someone less. What follows is some of windows shopping that you might find interesting:
lccoins.com has a relatively large advertisement and I have little knowledge of their community reputation. Overall, I think the pricing has been about 20% too high. But never the less a few items perhaps interested me. I've been interested lately in Bust Halfs in an affordable range, and bust half dimes in XF45. Listed in a 1837 SM 5C AU55 Orig NGC for $300. I'm unsure that "original" means. If it sa grade like "details" then that might not be great. It is a #00 coin. Additionally they listed a EF-40 Bust HALF from 1835 Orig NGC for $250 which is very affordable, but I'm uncertain if the price is good
I have never purchased from them, but the word on the street is nice quality but at a higher price than you can get elsewhere as you noted. I think "Orig" means the old first generation NGC slab. Unless the person listing it is "old school," and then it might mean original skin. TC
Well, what who a 1837 SM 5C AU55 Orig NGC go for? Their is also, and this was interesting, a ton of rolls from the same source for rolls from someone in Temple Arizonia. They are selling dozens of rolls of which 2 might have been interesting possibilities. One is a Merc roll for 275 without any claim of condition. The other was an Ike roll40.00 and 38 for extra rollsThen there was another one of 20 for 26 dollars and $5.oo postage, which, depending on condition, might be a very good deal from Joe Buffa at Grace Court Grand Blanc Mi. Assuming they aren't casino rubouts, that can be an intereting roll to try to cherry pick.
Check this out. This is highly tempting. http://www.davidkahnrarecoins.com/p-767-1826-o116a-pcgs-xf-45-225.aspx 1826 O.116a, PCGS XF-45, $225 Previous Up Next" Original and very pleasing. Price: $225.00
I knew one day there would be a mrbrklyn thread I could understand and offer an intelligent reply! I have puchased many items from lccoins.com, all from ebay auctions, never through thier catalog or website. I have ALWAYS been very happy with the price, shipping, and coin. I got some great deals from them on modern proofs. I agree their catalog pricing is higher, but when I win their auctions its always for like 25% or more off vs the exact same coin listed on catalog or website. So I guess the trick is to focus on their auctions.
Isn't the 19-D rare? IMO, and I absolutely can't grade mercs other than high end Mercs, I think it is better than good, and maybe VF30
I think the real question is, is it worth $50 bucks. BTW - i agree with his write up, there are only 2 hits on it, both on the obbverse rim. How much wear is on it? I don't know.
Do you like this guys stuff better? http://www.busthalf.com/CBH_for_sale_1.html Rick's Coin Shoppe 1810 Capped Bust Half Dollar AU53 ~ O-109a R4 Neat clashing & die cracks. $755.00

If you consider nearly 10 million rare, then yes. But the price doesn't reach "rare" prices. It definitely has wear on the bands on the fasces and hair, neck and lettering. It would go 30 IMO.

See I would like that but it is a massive profit for them. A 10th ounce of Platinum is close to 150 dollars and they want $319. So thes question is how much do you really like this little coin? Ruben
Did you notice that the Perth Platinum Coins are cheaper elsewhere, about $300 cheaper for the set? http://www.talismancoins.com/servlet/Detail?no=2024 From a Metal price perspective the silver might be a better buy http://www.talismancoins.com/servlet/Detail?no=1855 It is 5 ounces for $490 instead of 0.5 ounces of Plat for $1300 Amanda
Here is something to add to the window shopping thread. Check this out for 44.pp per silver coin, somewhat less that Perth Mint products. http://www.ebay.com/itm/350575651588?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 free shipping
This guy has some decent coins if you can cherry pick. I like the clasp in this. Does anyone know who this is? I have window shopped on Ebay and a local coin shop at capped bust halves and high grade barber coins. I was just in the coin shop buying some mylan flips and air-tight.
