Starting on 6/21/2012 the mint will offer S mint circulation quality quarters for sale to collectors. Not sure that any albums are available yet for these circ. quarters, but there are albums that have S holes intended for proofs.

My "theory" is it's because they are not proofs.

As rick said, these are not proofs; they are not-ready-for-prime-time business strikes (they will not be circulated.) They are a non-circulating business strike, if you will. It's another way for the Mint to make collectors feel there is something else they need to collect and are even being magnanimous enough to price them at almost a 100% premium. It's sort of a marketing gimmick for the obsessive-compulsive among us.

They are being priced at $18.95 a roll, plus shipping. If you are interested in buying a roll of these, just send me a money order for $18.95 and I will send you a $10.00 bill back and will not charge you shipping. That way, when all is said and done, you will be ahead of the game, as that is what a roll of these will most likely be worth in years to come.

I'm sure some will find there way into circulation. Basically there doing the same thing they did with the kennedy halves. Only now they're quarters from San Francisco.

Because business strikes don't normally have proof-like fields.

Sales of the initial S mint rolls will probably be high, so little potential for significant future appreciation. However, over the course of the series, there may be some "sleepers", as interest wanes. Or, the opposite could happen. It's all a WAG

If whats happening with the 2012 silver eagle set with early sale estimates from 500k to 1million+ and now looking like less then 250k will sell is any indication at all. I think much less of these "s" mint clad quarters will sell and the mintage will only be the initial production of 1,400,000 of each design.

  11. I am wondering if these "circulation quality" coins will be included in the circulation quarter set later this year!

    I bet a 68 or a 69 will bring in good $$$.

    I'm passing on 'em all.

What will the TV hucksters sell them for, they will make money on these. They can be fun to watch for a little while, but they sure charge way to much for stuff.

While I don't collect modern US coins by mintmark, these "S quarters" I found interesting. Maybe it's just the novelty effect, but I just ordered them. Or rather a fellow collector here in Germany will soon get a 100-piece bag and then "distribute" them along with other coins here. May well be that next year this "hey, something new" feeling will be gone, we'll see.

But yes, I also believe that some of those non-proof quarters from San Francisco will end up in circulation. I mean, what would a private buyer do with a bag (or even five by the end of the year) - hoard all these coins? I doubt it. And the loss incurred by releasing them into circulation will not be that high ...

I ordered three rolls. On a per roll basis they're cheaper than the 2010 and 2011 two-roll sets.

Well, for some odd reason, I bought a 100 coin bag of the El Yunque San Francisco quarters. Why? Well, I liked the idea that they were a business strike that was not being released to circulation, mintage looks to be rather low (under 1.5 million?), and the downside was only $9 plus $5 shipping.

Besides, 2012 ATB quarter production is about 1/7th 2011's average strikes per design for the 1st three issues of the year:

    2011 Gettysburg business strikes 348,600,000
    2011 Glacier business strikes 348,600,000
    2011 Olympic business strikes 348,600,000

2012 El Yunque business strikes 50,800,000 (plus "S" mintage)
2012 Chaco Culture business strikes 44,000,000 (plus "S" mintage)
    2012 Acadia business strikes 46,800,000

This purchase was PURELY speculative! Believe me, I've done worse before .

I'm all for a catch and release program. Buy a bag, keep a few, release the rest. It'll cost you 15 bucks, but think of the amount of fun you'll be providing to the all roll searchers out there.

Do you guys think the 1,400,000 mintage will hold? I think these could be sleepers forgotten in the wake of the 75th Eagle Set.

I ordered two rolls and two 100 count bags with one other item (total of FIVE items). Imagine my dismay when I find that the two 100 count bags were not in the box. ARGH.

I DID open one of the rolls. These "business strike" quarters look VERY nice. I did not break open the roll and am looking at Washington and S mintmark on both ends of the rolls. VERY bright, VERY smooth looking quarters. Definitely "PQ" !!!
