I'll be the first to say it....The people with all the knowledge, which is a lot on here, will need a pic before giving you the information you're looking for. And welcome to CT!!! :hail:

mrcheeks is correct. I am not an expert enough to answer your question but without a very good photograph, its impossible to answer about your coin.

Anywhere from $0-$150,000 if it is real, depending on condition.

Without a pic, I'm leaning towards the $0.

Try to stick a magnet to it, if it sticks, maybe $2 as a novelty, if not, then thats a good thing but not a definite indicator if its real.

    :D I think you mean $1 to $150,00 if it's real. :D

I'm not a gold expert but I've got a book

I just checked my "United States Gold Counterfeit Detection Guide". Bill Fivas depicts three high grade fakes for the 1851 dollar and shows their diagnostics.

Bill signed the book for me in 2007. :)

Well that's just the gold dollar. There are also fake seated dollars (1851 is a key date) and a well known fantasy 1851 "dollar" as well. Got to have pictures and or more information.

It's worth nothing if it's defaced or damaged beyond being reasonably ID'd.

Ever heard of melt? :) Assuming genuine (gold), of course.

The OP never said if it was a gold or silver dollar...

Good point! So much for reading, huh? :) Someone else mentioned gold and it just stuck. In my defense though, and considering the LS dollar mintage of around 1000 or so to the gold mintage somewhere over 3 million, it was probably a safe assumption.

The only point I was trying to make is that a real US dollar is ALWAYS worth a dollar. It doesn't matter if it is gold or silver providing that its legal tender status is not somehow revoked. :)

If it's a genuine 1851 silver dollar it's one of the three rarest coins in the series. If it's a gold dollar it's worth considerably less. But pics and more detail are essential. DON'T CLEAN IT!
