I am starting to get interested in older cents and thought about bidding on this one. I really don't know much about old copper. I am more of a silver guy. I thought the detail looked decent and the price was in my budget but after looking at the pictures for a bit, the surface seemed very pitted. I am trying to educate myself, so did I make the right call on not bidding because of the excessive pitting? Or is this normal for older circulated copper? Thanks in advance!
I don't see any pictures, but I don't think the copper-nickel cents (small cents 1856-1864) pitted a lot. I think that was more a characteristic of the pure copper half cents and large cents, 1793-1857, especially the early ones.

You're better off saving and/or waiting to buy something nice. Its better to pay up for quality than settle for a problem coin regardless of price.
First - get a book on FE and/or IHC's. The red book on FE and IHC's is one I would recommend. While pittin does occur on some I thing you can do better than that. You can wait for a more solid coin. You might even want to check dealers to see what they sell the coin for in the grade you are looking for.
Feel free to right click; save as and post the pic. I don't think it's much extra effort to click the link. Thank you, I do plan to do some more reading.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1857-CHOICE...d=15873890563126342&pid=100013&prg=1005&rk=1& This is the coin I'd be looking at but I'd need to confirm it is real. My instinct tells me it is fake.
A. Bass. Everything is better with bass, just ask my man Skrillex. Oh and I find that the right side is unevenly worn kinda of suspicious. (right on obverse, left on reverse).
The coin the OP was looking at wasn't a bad deal for $25, it was in about VG10 so I'd say it was probably worth $25-$30.
I'm not so sure if it's a fake. The opposite edges look consistent to create that "worn affect". And the toning on the observe side appears consistent with the strike. This would be a darn good fake if it were, but I suppose I shouldn't be surprised if it is.
