Just wondering what they opinions here are on if this coin can be saved by cleaning....err "Conserved" by NCS. This is a silver (0.9990%) coin from Vietnam. It is in perfectly fine UNC condition other than the IMO ugly tarnish on it. Is this something that would clean right off by NCS 'dipping' the coin or do you think this looks like something that, although maybe better, will still show on the coin and always be ugly? I'm not very familiar with how well the professional techniques work in different situations. Thanks MV
Does that mean you do or do not have experience with professionally cleaned/conserved coins? "worth" is quite objective and for many different reasons but none really have anything to do with the original post so I wont waste everyones time going into it. Thanks
Well it doesn't look like any kind of natural toning. It appears the coin has been in contact with some kind of chemical. I highly doubt it could be saved.
I wouldn't spend money to have that coin cleaned, err, err, I mean, conserved. There was a video posted in the "I like cleaned coins" thread that I think would be appropriate for this coin. It involves placing the coin in a hot baking soda and salt solution with some aluminum foil. There will still be some dull, darkish spots where the tarnish has occured. But it will lighten it up quite a bit.
Every coin can be cleaned. I don't suggest cleaning every coin though. I wouldn't bother with this one.
That's the info I was looking for and it sounds like pretty much everyone is in agreement. Thanks to those that replied...
