Once again, my prying eyes have spotted something interesting just hiding in my random coins...I'm wondering if this is an 1859/8 overdate, which variety it is, and what grade you'd give it...

Thanks for the help! Here are the photos:

I'll be curious to hear what people have to say on this one. The 1859 had 400+ die varities. I can tell you from the 7th vine loop, that this was an early one.

    This is from your coin:

    Good grief.

Checked that website out - lots of good info, but like you said...soooo many varieties. There is a repunched letter on the C of CANADA, but I can't see any die breaks mentioned on that site, nor any other repunched letters. I believe the second vine loop I have makes it a Type E reverse...but after that...got a bit confused on the obverse.

Yes, that is a 9/8. There is no generic 9/8 .. there were 13 different working dies that made coins with a 9 handpunched over an 1858 die. Every one of the 13 is slightly different. As far as the "vickycents" website goes, it is a valuable tool if you want to go deep deep into the ID of each working die, but it wades in very far concentrating on the die itself rather than the variety. . If you just want an overview and photo of the more collectible varieties for the large cents, then go to Dan's website http://www.piczo.com/Dan-in-Crystal-Lake?cr=6# or Rob Turner's site http://www.victoriancent.com/index.html . You can also pick up a copy of the 2011 Charlton guide (65th edition) that will give you 80 Vicky varieties.
