You have to read this ... it is either too sad or too funny..

    http://news.opb.org/article/ashland_buried_treasure_stolen/

An Ashland woman says she buried a safe containing $262,000 in gold Krugerrands in her backyard two years ago. But when she went to dig it up earlier this year, it was gone

I am pretty skeptical. First, why report the theft if you refuse to allow it to be investigated ? More likely, she forgot where she buried them.

They should always be placed inside a PVC tube, sealed on the ends. Then surround that with cement to form a brick. Then bury pretty deep with a piece of junk metal placed about 2 feet over it in the hole. Next plant a thorny plant over the hole.

But, if she buried a safe, I imagine it was heavy and she needed help to get the job done. There is no secret if more than one person knows about something.

    Just sayin'

I'd have liked to have seen her going to the 70th Precient(sp) and explain this to the desk Sargent.

    Hello

Is this 911. i want to report that my Krugerrands are missing. No no, 270 thousand and 64 cents worth...they are, like gone, not even where I left them. No, not in a safe...no not in the safety deposit box... well, i remember specifically burying them right near the Cherry Tree 3 years ago in the front yard ... do you really think it could have
    been the Gardner?

What was that? How did I get 200 thousand and 67 cents worth of Gold coins?... hold on a minute, I'll be right back.

You're giving instructions as though this is a reasonable thing to do. Should I bring a shovel over to your place and look for thorny plants?

"The woman said that two years ago she hired a man to dig several big holes in her back yard."

This sentence is hilarious to me for some reason. But seriously, if you are planning to bury 260K in your yard, DON'T HIRE SOME GUY TO DIG THE HOLE!!!!

Smells like Insurance Fraud to me.

$262,000 is about 150 Gold coins which wouldn't take too large of a safe.

    Maybe she's just an idiot?

Is it safe to put coins in a PVC tube?
Wouldn't the material/glue give off chemicals that will harm coins?

I have thought about using a section of PVC pipe with end caps to place coins into during a threat of hurricane.
Not to bury, but as a safety measure incase of the unexpected. Sometimes these things approach weak then get strong at the last second, when it's too late to evacuate, sometimes they are projected to land 100 miles from you, and at the last second turn, when it's again too late to react in a big way, such as securing everything. I've even considered using a 10" diameter PVC pipe section to install in the floor, with one end up and a cleanout cap flush with the floor, as a place to throw stuff in a weather emergency.

She is no idiot, That's why she had him dig three of them. She only needed one.

But if it were a big safe, on a rainy day couldn't the safe sink. But then again I hear that coffin can float up, so the safe could've floated up and someone just stole it.

To the best of my knowledge coffins only float up if the water table is really close to the surface. Say Florida or Louisiana so it depends if hilly, sometimes mountainous terrain in oregon has a high water table..unlikely.
As for the OP my neighbors think a criminal keeps stealing/moving their stuff only they find it in plain sight a few days later. The best one was the criminal replaced their tall water heater with one that was shorter and fatter and held more water...HUH?? It's not funny it's senility or halucinating.
