Is this a scan? If so, can you tell us what/if any luster is on the coin? Scan's completely cover luster, but I think I see some around the rims.
You don't see the luster hidden by scans? Or maybe I am wrong, but I thought it was AU or MS. Horn looks fine. 37's were really well struck.
It is a scan. Actually has 85% luster, missing a little luster on obv. hair. I need more practice using my camera. I can't see signs of actual wear.
I have about 6 1937's slabbed that have a sharper horn & split tail. These look too flat & worn to me.
Well 85% percent luster means that 15% is wear, so I think it is an AU coin, just hard to tell from the scan.
[h=4]I estimate it misses AU. It's a very nice XF45 EF40 Extremely Fine - Full horn. Slight wear on Indian's hair ribbon. AU50 About Uncirculated - Traces of light wear on only the high points of the design. Half of mint luster is present.[/h]
Bounce the coin against this sitehttp://www.pcgs.com/Photograde/#/Buffalo/Grades. Scans are horrible(usually not always) for showing luster. To me the coin shows maybe enough to get into the AU range, but I kind of doubt it. You have to be careful because some dates were so weakly struck what looks like an XF/AU coin will be graded MS. I believe as mentioned 1937 had a better strike.
I think it is XF. The coin was or was very near a full strike. You can tell by the two tell tale "nicks" above the braid. So I believe the flats spots are wear and not the result of a weak strike. Mike
I don't anymore. I did because most of the buffalo nickels I see are in junk buckets and I found this one mixed in with a bunch of no-dates and it looked amazing to me. It's the highest grade buffalo that I own so I don't have anything to compare it to. I cant afford to get the higher grade buffalo nickels so I tend to not even look around for them. There are very few coin shops around here and even fewer that stock MS buffalo nickels.
Nor to hijack the thread but here is the reverse of one of my buffalo nickels. I really like the series. Scratches are on the slab.
