D'oh. I should have responded much earlier to this.

You're right that th mint set coins are very often no better than any others. Indeed, all the '68-P cents are spotted in the sets now. With some mint sets the coins can be just about impossible to find nice. The '79-D is awful and the '75-D isn't that much better.

The problem with roll coins is that they are so hard to find with great strikes so few are even worth checking for clean surfaces. On the other hand the mint set strikes are often crisp so it's mostly a matter of finding one clean.

Cents are the most common modern in gem but in higher grades it's very hit and miss whether you can find them or not.

Instead of saying that the mint set coins are better I should say that the best coins generally go into mint sets each year. Of course even this isn't always true and they can be so rare that they are hardly worth looking for. It's easier to find cent rolls to check than mint sets and the rolls give you more shots at finding something. As a rule of thumb those who prefer nicely made cents should look at mint sets and those who prefer clean cents should look at rolls. And those like BadThad and I have our work cut out for us. :desk:

The thing about OBW solid rolls is most were not stored properly. I've opened a LOT of rolls and the coins were either heavily spotted or had corrosion. It's a tough hunt indeed!
