Hello Kasia, Normally I would not have photos of the impaired proofs but you asked for it- I found these two proof coins while roll searching about $500 worth of rolled half dollars. The 1996 has some scuffs but the 1971 was pretty clean.
Modern-day proofs, for the most part, will have mirrored fields and frosted devices. Here's a Prender I found in the same box as a Bender...
The blanks are specially polished & the dies that strike the coins are specially polished so they impart mirrored fields on the coin. The coin is struck twice in the coining chamber to impart all the details of the design typically with no weakness anywhere in the design. The edge of the coin is very sharp and precise. On older coins the term "high wire edge" can describe the edge. There are no contact marks on proof coins because they are specially handled into & out-of the coining press. However, if a proof gets circulated, then it can take some hits like my 1996 example. Modern proofs like the 1996 also have frosted devices which stand-out from the mirror fields. Not all proof coins have the frosted devices.
Thanks. I am going thru a box of halves tomorrow. It is the third one total that I am will have gone thru. So far, no silver. Not giving up though. I just got back in to collecting coins, so every box holds something that is new and exciting for me. Like the old saying "if you haven't seen it before, then it's new to you..." I appreciate all of your help and input. I look forward to renewing my coin collecting and reading all of the posts on here!! Thanks---Steve
I picked up a 1980S SBA today in some CWR, but I'm not sure if it's the proof S or not. It's a little beat up but the fields are definitely shinier than all the other SBA's I got.
This is most of them. I think I have a few more floating around somewhere. No silver, unfortunately. 1996, 1972, 1977, 1976, 1976, 1976, 1973, 2000 1977, 1968, 1991 Don't know if I kept this one.
Here is a picture of a 2002 Silver proof that I found CRHing a few months ago. My only silver proof I've found.
Can't post pics right now but my proof finds so far are: 1988 S dime 1962 nickel 1981 S Half dollar possibly 1972 S penny
It's a 1968, I'm not at home so I don't remember if it has a mintmark. Were 1969s and 1970s Pennies just general circulation issues? I always get so confused with S mintmarks in the 60s and SMS's and whatnot
Went to my local Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union put a few rolls of pennies that I went through the other day and went to the tellers, Asked for any Ike dollars and halves. I had to explain who was on the dollar the large ones. (IKE) and the Halves had Kennedy. She didn't have any but asked a few tellers. one person had one half. So I had to go over there, different line. she sold me a 1992-S Silver proof. I gave her my card and said I buy any type of older coins and "odd" type bills, blue, red, yellow, brown, etc. Nice day.
