Reading "Coins" magazine yesterday... What are they thinking?

I got by the library yesterday and was mulling around some magazine racks, where "Coins" magazine caught my eye. I haven't read a coin related magazine in about a year, so I decided to have a look at the July 2012 issue...

Anyway, as I was glancing through their 'coin values' section, I noticed that 2011 and 2012 "satin finish" clad coins, in all clad demonations, are an ABSOLUTE STEAL right now! Seems to me that their rarity would have called for much higher values than they listed for these years!

It doesn't seem as though "rarity" would be the right word for describing any modern coins (unless they only made 100 of them). The mintages may have been miniscule compared to typical values, but numasmitists hoard coins upon release. It's the same with all collectables, examples with the largest demand tend to be the stuff that was produced before the items became collectable.

Yes. You said that the values for 2011 and 2012 satin finish coins should be worth more due to their rarity. Am I misinterpreting something?

The fact that the mint stopped minting satin finish coins after 2010.

Another reason to take price guides in magazines with a very large grain of salt.

Ahh, gotcha. The joke was lost on me. :foot-mouth:

With respect to my previous statement, a coin with a mintage of zero would definitely qualify as rare.

The post was a bit tongue in cheek.
I knew the 'satin' part would get by some people.

I don't think I've ever read one of these "Coin" magazines... they make just about anything these days! ;)

PS. Seriously though, I've never read or subscribed to a coin related magazine before. For some odd reason I have no desire to start either.

Before the internet, I was addicted to coin related publications. Now I am just addicted to the internet.
