    Hi all,

I found this in pocket change. My initial reaction was... this is a dirty coin that had been soaked in some sort of solvent/chemical. After reading a bunch on CONECA, I thought there might be a remote chance that this quarter is legitimately lacking nickel. I looked at the rim and the vast majority looks copperish (the coin actually almost looks rusty).

There is a waxy blotch on the back... I've resisted the temptation to clean off the wax.

    Thoughts?

Thanks for entertaining my post! :)

I've found a couple of those while metal detecting, I'm pretty sure that they're just really dirty quarters that might have been in the ground for a few years.

Yeah, probably a spot on assessment. I added another photo, hopefully this is a bit clearer.

    Have you weighed it?

It weighs in at 5.59 grams (86.2 grains). Seems a little light, eh?

It has either been lost in the dirt like someone mentioned or has been in a fire. this is how they look after having been rescued after being burned in the paper trash pile.

...and knowing is half the battle. This quarter will go towards buying my lunch today. Thanks all!

Oh no... don't spend it John. I throw all my damaged coins into a jar. If they could only talk and tell us what the heck happened to them. Here's one of my better examples:

I like that idea, I'm sure I have a jar laying around... I wish I would have saved that dime that had a crack going down the middle. I'm sure that was junk, right? :rollling:

I'll also keep my "manger penny":

I have no idea how this got here... but I've ruled out mint error as a possibility.

BTW, if your coin could talk, I think it would say... "OUCH!" Pretty cool.
