Some dealers will even give younger people better deals just to get them started. My theory is, if you search enough rolls, with a good bit of luck, you could get away without buying any coins. Also, check out providentmetals.com They have all kinds of coins that you can get in all grades.
I started at 10 about 40 years ago. I stopped for a while and returned about 10 years ago. When I started, I just found coins in circulation and put them into empty Whitman folders. I would replace coins when I found dates in better condition. It was kind of fun. If you have a digital camera, you can also share your finds on here and get a good idea of the condition of the coin from others of us in the hobby. It is also fun to get a little history on the coin. Welcome to CT. It is a good place to share the fun of our hobby.
Yes, I've seen this in action. Here in Maine, I brought my oldest son to his first coin show, and 3 different dealers gave my son free coins. If memory serves, he got 3 bison nickels, a v-nickel, and a jefferson nickel, just for being a cute kid. just chat up some of the dealers, some are bound to take an interest in your new hobby and maybe give you some advice and a deal or two.
One of the local coin clubs here has an annual show & bourse every March. They also have a workshop for young numismatists and give the kids goody bags with coins and other collecting necessities. A lot of Cub & Boy Scouts there but last time I saw some Brownies/Girl Scouts too!
That's great advice! Never BUY a coin with problems. ('Honest' wear is NOT a problem, we're talking about scratches, holes, dents, dings, ect...) Those coins don't bother you much if you get them from circulation, but don't buy problem coins. You'll be happy later if you keep your eyes out for quality. A very low grade coin can have eye appeal and be honest quality, and a high grade coin can be a problem coin. So take your time and learn. Spend most of your time right now getting from circulation and bargan bins.
I would search atleast $5 in Pennies, there should be a few wheats in them. I searched $10 today and I got like 5 wheats, oldest 1926 and this nice one below.
