Just got this in today, thanks to my good friends at liberty Coin in Huntington Beach California, they have some really nice stuff, and even though there selection isnt huge most of the time they have what I am looking for and there prices are just outstanding, in comparing Liberties prices and AMPEX, the coin I purchased 1909/08 in PCGS 55 was actually a few dollars cheaper then APMEX and there offering was a 53 all post some examples for comparison, why did I choose this coin I actually was on the hunt for a 1909/08 example for almost 3 months now lost an auction on a 58, and actually wasn't as good as this one so I am glad I lost...LOL also the mintage is pretty low in comparison with only 161,215 so attractive examples can be hard to find, heres mine and a couple of others I found.
I waked away from this one because if you compare this one to the 55 it isnt even close, very dull and not nearly as bright, plus way to many distractions in the main field.
the last coin I want to show you is a MS-63, and before I move on I will tell you this coin is listed at $8,434, is it worth it ? me personally I would not spend that amount of money on a coin unless it was perfect but this one is far from it, you be the judge?
You can view at APMEX, I think when there evaluating a coin MS I think is more about how bright the coin is not so much the other details, but I can count 10 things I dont like about this coin, and I am being nice...LOL
There are only about 4,000 1909/08 Saints, the only overdate in the Saint-Gaudens lineup. That's why the MS-63 is still pricey in that grade. Even if you lump it in with the regular 1909's that only adds another 1,000 in the MS-63 category. Add 'em up...add in the higher-graded coins...and you are no where near the 25,0000 needed to satiate Type Collectors and see the numismatic premium fade. It's short so the competition has driven up the price for Choice Gem Quality coins. The combined 1909 coins are 11th in production rank but 21st in survival rank. And most of the coins are in the AU category. BTW, the coin is probably 10x as expensive if you go from MS-63 to MS-65 (about 35 there) with only 2 at MS67/68.
