i'd grade it at 45 or 50... pics are too blurry to make out wear above the ear but I can see full liberty. I think that if you won't say where you got it, you know you got a deal, because my bluebook lists that year and grade at $40-$45. Nice coin at common date redbook price. Good pick!

I was not expecting my coin to be worth that much!

The verdigris on the reverse is not helping it any.

+1. The obverse has great eye appeal and no major problems (as far as I can see) but the reverse is definitely bringing it down. It should still sell for at least $20 IMHO.

it's like a semi-semi-key date. You should invest in a redbook... there is probably one for sale there in the shop. Does he wear really thick glasses? I don't know why he wouldn't have put a closer-to-retail price on that, unless he couldn't see it. Or he doesn't know much about coins, but in my experience if at least one employee doesn't know, he knows a guy for that. Check out this link:http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAP...%2BpqsgvzsSSl4lwGN8v8%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc It's a little more worn but no green mile ;)

    Or this:http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sac...kw=1879+cent&LH_Complete=1&_arr=1&_armi=Other

Sometimes you just get lucky. I bought over 14 pounds of foreign coins over the course of a few months, and several auctions. Among those "foreign" coins was a bent, very worn, but still legible 1878 Indian cent. Some people just don't pay attention. Get the book so YOU can :)

I have a book. I just suck at grading coins.

I agree. That's what kept it from being a 50 IMO. Perhaps I was too lenient... But I think cremebrule hit the low end spot on.
DO NOT CLEAN IT!!! IF YOU DO IT WILL BE ONLY WORTH WHAT YOU PAID, AND THAT ONLY BECAUSE OF THE DATE. AGAIN, THOU SHALT NOT CLEAN THY COINS!!!

Gee... I always clean my coins. Normally I use a rock tumbler for verdigris, but you might consider Verdi-Care.:smile

I think if you send that into a TPG, it would only come back as XF or AU Environmental Damage (because of the reverse)... I am personally struggling to sell some NGC Environmental Damage Coins but I have a lot more in mine than $2.00.. Greysheet says Bid for XF is $55.00, so with Environmental Damage I take 25% of the BID Price, which would be about $15.00.. Not a bad deal at all though, you should try to get some more of those!!!

Nice buy. I like to pick through dealers' boxes of IHCs to find steals like yours.

That coin would be a good candidate for a 3 page Whitman blue folder. You don't see the back anyway. Just pop it out to check the reverse every once and a while.
