    Hi
I was looking to buy a Morgan dollar in at least MS 63. I want it graded, either by PCGS, ANACS, or NGC. I was just wondering about what this would cost me. Date/ mint doesn't matter, I just want a nice Morgan.
    Thanks

Should be super cheap. Since there's tons and tons of common date Morgans out there, it shouldn't cost you more than $70 (I'm guessing $40-50 range). That's assuming you want a blast white one. Morgans are notorious for their outrageous toning and can up the price by 2-5x (or more!).

  4. Retail, an 80-S or 81-S in 63 should run you around 55-65 in a PCGS or NGC holder.

A blast white common date Morgan can be had for a good price even in MS64 condition. And if you're willing to put in a bit more money, a MS65 too.

Oh and buy the coin not the slab. Regardless of the grade given you should take a close look at the coin beforehand.

Morgandude11 As long as it's Silver, I'm listening

1879s,1880s, 1881s, 1880,1881,1882, 1886, 1887, 1889, 1888o 1882o, 18820, 1884o are all about $60 in MS 63. ($66 in price guide). Add another $20 for most of those dates in MS 64. So, common date Morgans are easily found, and can be had cheaply. The exceptions on all of those dates are PLs and DMPLs, which raise prices quite a bit.

Alright, I'm just looking for a nice Morgan to add to the collection. I really don't want a toned one, and I want the slab so I have a little more security against buying the Hong Kong Special of the Week.

Agree strongly. You can find most of the above dates in MS 63 in a PCGS holder for $60-70 each.

I'm not real familiar with grading, would they list if there were any problems on the reverse?
    Thanks

If it had significant problems it would not be graded, or it would be slabbed as "genuine" without a grade. That coin I used as a random example looks pretty nice, with one small rim nick and a few bag marks. That is all normal for Morgans.

I just don't like buying coins without a reverse pic. I don't understand how someone selling something for $60 couldn't spend the $0.15 more for an extra picture.

If you are looking for any date...just a nice example of the coin. I recommend 1880-S specifically. They are considered the nicest strike date in the series and are very easy to dins in MS.

If there were problems with the coin, the TPG would "body bag" the coin by putting it in a "genuine" /"details" slab. There would be an indication of the problem(s), but some people here have said TPG can miss issues, although I think that is very uncommon.

Here is a coin of mine that has an issue:

Anything with a full numeric grade is without known problems. I would do alot more reading on here before making a purchase, so you know exactly what to avoid, and also what to aim for.

Also, if you want to see some high quality pics of both the obverse and reverse of all coins, I would HIGHLY recommend this site:

    http://www.northeastcoin.com/selectinventorycategories.jsp

Just select "US coins" > Dollars, then scroll down to Morgans and look at the coins they have <$100.00, pick one you like, and make a purchase if you are ready.

This site also have great pics, and some nice affordable Morgans:

    http://www.hjbltd.com/unitedstatesco/cnus.asp?inventorygroup=us

Just select "Morgan" in drop down, then radio button "Certified", then click submit.

These sites will be much more consistant than random ebay sellers. But if you want eBay, try http://www.ebay.com/sch/kryptonitecomics/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686

    Have fun.

The good Doc is right--80s and 81s are great start out dates--well struck, plentiful, and not expensive. 79s is also generally well struck.

However, date and mint mark play a part in what you'll pay for a BU Morgan, which MS63 is. Even a key date in MS63 can be pricey, and some Carson City Morgans are in the $5,000 area.

I actually traded for one off of a fellow Cointalk member. I had pictures but was messing around and lost them :/ . I should be receiving the coin before too long, so I will be able to post photos then.

It is a 1921-S graded MS-63 by NGC. Overall, I am happy with it for $15 and an ASE.
