I have largely ignored modern coins for the last twenty years or so (aside from proofs). So I am on a mission to catch up. I picked this up yesterday. I see some nice toners in there, but it is for now, hard to see the grade of each coin. So did I overpay? Sniper cost me $70 at the last second, but their bid was less than my max bid. http://www.ebay.com/itm/320918940835?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
I have very little interest in modern coins, I collect early proofs (1836-date). I am really only catching up the family collection so I really don't want to piece the sets together one coin at a time. If there are some sub par coins, I will replace them. It's just easier that way.
I would say that you got an OK deal. The book alone is worth $25. What is going on with the 2002 silver proof? Is the stain on the coin or on the book? If on the coin, I would replace it with another coin. It kind of distracts the eye away from the other nice coins.
Good price especially if some of the toners turn out really nice or if there are some nicely struck full torch coins. A couple of the earlier low-mintage issues will cost you $20 to 30 in BU. The rest of the pre 64 silver coins are common and can be bought for 4 or 5 dollars in BU. So just to get up to 1964 you're talkin over $200. With the silver proofs and all the others in BU/proof you did well.
I haven't seen it yet, but I have some silver proof state quarters with the same yellowing on the obverse. I thought I would wait and see if some toning was developing, but nothing more has happened in almost ten years.
Not to mention the "key" of the series (49-S) also has some nice rim toning. Looking forward to seeing your results!
Not a bad deal. Not a great deal but not bad at all. You got almost a full set and a nice album to boot. You should be able to bring it completely up-to-date for very little money.
As others have said, I think it was a fair deal. You could have done better, but you could have paid more as well. There are some nice coins in there, I love the toners. Not a bad way to get back into buying some moderns! :thumb:
If you have the latest "Cherrypicker's Guide", you may be able to find some nice varieties that would make this even a better deal. I like the Roosevelt dime series and am still working on my slabbed set.I have all the pre-1965 silver issues and most of the post-65 proof issues. But finding MS clad examples is tough, since they have such a low value, most people don't bother getting those coins certified.
Roosevelt dimes are 1 of the most over look coin the USA has ever minted.1946-64PDS + 1965-11-PDS. L+C coin would have change you $450.00.if the 47-S grades a MS-66FB there a big part of your $ back. So I think you did well
With all due respect, L&C is not a great comparison. I see their ads and get their catalogs in the mail and their prices are average retail (meaning high).
You did okay, depending on how toned some are you may have even gotten a good deal. Since toned coins usually bring in a premium.
I think you did just fine. Especially if those toners look nice in hand. Also, if you have some full torch in the 46-64's you should be happy.
Thanks guys. It has been so long since I collected any modern series that I am sort of out of touch with the market prices. Ask me what any proof from the 1800s is worth, I'm all over that, but moderns confuse me. I didn't think that I got a bad deal, but I didn't really know. I will be sure to put up a few images of the prizes from the set when I get it in the next couple of days. I wish I could send a bill to the guy that cost me $70 at the last second. I would have really had a great deal without that.
