Anyone 'mistakingly' spend or otherwise get rid of an valuable coin?

A few years ago when I was younger I spent a couple franklin and kennedy silver halves on a pack of pokemon cards.

My mom accidentally spent a silver certificate that either her dad or grandfather had given to her. She noticed it before the cashier put it away, and asked for it back. She explained that her dad/grandfather gave it to her and offered a normal dollar in return. The cashier looked at it, saw what it was, and flat-out refused to give it back to her. :( Whether it was worth much I don't know, but it was a gift from someone she loved and that makes it valuable sentimentally.

That story still makes me rage when I think about it because of what a <many nasty names> that cashier was. If I hadn't been six years old at the time I would have gone in and probably gotten myself arrested for starting a fight over it. >_>

When I was young and in elementary school, my dad had his coins tucked away in his closet. I was a mischievous kid and decided it was a good idea to go into his quarter album (32-64) and take a few quarters to spend. I ended up spending them at the vending machine at school on candy or some other sort of snack. It looks like silver was only 3-4 dollars at the time and I wish now that I was into coins when I was young... I can't believe I still remember the day that I did this, and now I can only hope that they were only commons and not the 32-D or 32-S! The collection is now mine and it's kind of funny how it's come back full circle. The album is pretty much just commons in circulated condition so I don't think anything I took out would have been worth more than melt. Still though, it's something I regret to this day!
