How come I haven't seen you post before a while ago? Each and every one of your posts make me laugh. Whatever you are doing, you are doing it right.

WANTED: BIG ROUND ONES, OLDER THE BETTER

SUBJECT: Big round coins, if you like em, then I like you. I'm a confident man, so even if yours (collection) is bigger than mine, we can still work things out. Send me detailed pics, close ups of both sides perferred!

Actually. That's going to be my next pick up line...

"Aye girl, I like your obverse, let me getta look at that reverse"

You and I both, my friend!

    Thanks to you!

I posted a hilarious auction, and got referred to this board after there was a thread about me. I've stuck around ever since, causing ruckus and running amock, keeping the moderators busy along the way.

You are likely to be a SWM for quite a while, I think. :D

Tried that with my GF...before I knew a key piece of information.

Gave her an UNC Fiji sixpence (the one with the turtle) as a small part of a group of other birthday gifts. Was expecting her to say "Oh, that's cute" or something like that...you see, she HAD a turtle. I guess it was just part of the guessing game we have to go through as guys...

Anyway, her ACTUAL response was "Oh."

My response, "Well, I thought it might be fun because you have a turtle."

"My ex gave me that turtle. I hate that turtle."

Me: "Can I have the coin back then?"

    Her: "No."

    :)

    That was parody.

Well, it's good you found one that would tolerate your hobby, like I did.

OK, mine mostly tolerates it and that's mostly because I previously collected gold and silver which seemed to make sense to her.

All I know is if I say something in the woods and my wife isn't there to hear it I'm still wrong. So you can imagine what she thinks of my coins. :(

Nice to know I'm not alone on that.

What I've found out in being married for 6 years is that some wives are just better than others at making their husbands think they're in charge. :p

This thread makes me very sad about the state of marriages in today's world. Neither my Beautiful Bride of nearly 57 years, nor I, would ever dream of spending one dollar on our hobbies or for non-essentials that would result in an adverse impact on our living standard. Our trust of each other on that point means that when she buys a Coach (or Bally) purse, or a piece of jewelry, I don't question her; and when I buy a coin, or a new piece of ham radio gear, she doesn't question me.

And, of course, I can't help wondering why everyone seems to assume that all coin collectors are male and all spouses are female!

Might be that most posters here are male and most males who are married have wives. Just a wild guesss.

I think we exaggerate a bit for entertainment, but most of the time my wife deosn't care what I buy. She knows I'm not tossing my retirement or neglecting bills, so she could care less other than giving me a blank stare when I get excited over a wheat penny. :D

I don't nag about what she buys either, she works and makes her own money so she's not spending mine and the portion of the bills she pays don't go unpaid.

Out of sight, out of mind approach works well with my GF. I ship everything to the office.

For those who have wives who don't see the value of your hobby it could be worse for them.

Tell them every hobby has expenses, and everyone should have a hobby they are interested in. If you were to take up golf you would need a new set of clubs, pay for greens fees and possibly a country club membership. Or if you were to take up fishing, you would likely spend money on a fishing boat, a truck to pull it with, plenty of gas for the boat and truck, and a bunch of fishing tackle. Plus, you will need extra time to hit the links or the lakes to get the most out of the hobby.

The great thing about coin collecting, it's something you can do 365 days a year regardless of weather. It is something that is mostly confined to a few coin shows and flea markets, otherwise the time spent on your coin hobby is spent at home with the family. Also, it is a hobby that has less of a chance of deminished value and possibly can yield returns on investment.

Coin collecting is one of the best ones out there for those who have families. A 50 year coin inheritance to your children is much better than a bag of old golf clubs and an old boat needing to be repaired all the time. If the kids disagree, at least they'll have the opportunity to cash in their inheritance and by new golf clubs or a fishing boat.

Great stories by those posted above. I sell very expensive products to hobbists for a living, so the pointers above are some of the same pointers I offer to my customers whom must gain 'wife approval'. Good Luck!

Not to mention most coins do have a value. I've had hobbies where the stuff involved had little or no value so when I was done with the hobby all the stuff I bought was worthless. lol. At least if you have a coin collection and for some reason were to stop collection or caring about coins you coult flip it for cash of some sort.

Hey, I don't understand why these guys are hiding and acting stealth about what they do. My wife just thinks I'm a geek, but at least we trust eachother.

Why so sad? As the OP on this thread, I can tell you I had no problem showing the thread to my wife and I would never say anything or post anything that I wouldn't say directly to my wife.

My wife laughed at it just like everyone else. Just good honest ribbing. You should see how she busts my chops:).

Most of us don't hide our purchases, or try to deceive either. I know I certainly don't. A few folks might be crossing a line a bit, but for the most part it is all in good fun.

Exactly. My wife thinks I'm a huge geek (I love Sci-fi, played roleplaying games and video games, love history and now coins) so I'm not really hiding for the purposes of not wanting her to know I spent money but to avoid more ribbing.

Like the other day when she was gather the laundry and emptying the pockets of my pants and I suddenlyrealized I had a 1950 wheat penny in there. If I didn't mention something it would go right in the change jar and I might have to dig through the thing to get it back. So, I told her that I have a wheat penny in there so don't lose it and she just looked a me like this:
