I'm moving to Munich (Germany) this September and wondering what is the best and safe way to transport my coin collection. I've about 2,600 coins, all of them on 2x2 cardboards and then on 20 pocket pages and binders. The weight is considerable, so it wont be possible to carry them with my hand baggage. Also is there any restriction or taxes I should pay at the customs ?
You can't fit 2,600 coins in a 56 x 35 x 23 cm sixed carry-on? Those have to be some massive coins! Guy
There was a thread a month or two ago asking for the same info. See if you can search for that thread..it had some really good, very helpful suggestions. I'm no good at searching past threads, but if I find it, I'll come back with a link. Or maybe someone else will post that link.Seems that person was going away for one year, couldn't stand the idea of leaving his collection behind.Good luck.
It's not about the volume, it's the weight. It's limited to 5 Kg. I know most people aren't asked to weight their carry-on's but I think one with a bunch of coins is a good candidate for the scale!
I once packed 36 mini loaves of homemade breads (pumpkin,blueberry,apple-cinnamon, zucchini, lemon) all wrapped in tin foil into my carry on. They never weighed it and didn't question the contents when it went through the scanner.
