I am as flabbergasted as all the other people on this forum that ICG has rated it MS62 (and therefore also genuine) and would like to see this slab before I believe what has been mentioned here! I am very sceptical in this story!
Getting it graded by ICG was a big mistake. You should have invested another $10 in to an evaluation from PCGS or NCG people will actually pay for, it blows my mind that a coin that could be so valuable was sent to ICG. The grade doesn't make any sense to be either, if it's real it should go higher IMO, very fishy.
Yes, but when were the coins originally graded by ANACS. There was a time when they were regarded as an excellent TPG...nearly on par with PCGS and NGC. Then, the company changed hands and things changed. If those coins were graded by ANACS prior to the change...then I'm sure they were accurately graded.
Here are the pics Here are the pics of the slab. http://s1050.photobucket.com/albums/s412/theogre555/1861 slabed/ To answer the question of why icg. My wife and I go to a lot of auctions and flea markets and one flea market has a man that has a small coin, gold and silver store. I have bought a few 90% coins from him (pre 64) as I buy a lot of these if under spot. His store is about 8 miles from my house and I visit him from time to see what he has, a couple weeks back I talked to him about coin grading as I had never sent in a coin before. He showed me a list of places and told me ones not to deal with and he said pcgs you have to be a member or find a store willing to send coins in for you, ngc was a little pricy and he has used icg with good results in the past. (fair prices and quick turn around). I called icg and the lady I talked to was very help full would help me fill out the form and explained the tiers to me. She sounded like she wanted my business and that is why I went with them. I think the pics of the coin some how make it look better than it is. His thought was maybe a ms63 when I showed it to him, but he said he was not a good grader ether. Regards, Steve
Well, I must say that my original inclination about this coin was probably wrong. I now believe ICG got this one right, and they certainly didn't overgrade, at least not according to what we can see in the pictures. Congrats, Steve!
Just a few things about ICG. I don't use them but know a bit about the folks there. The president, Mark Yaffe authenticated gold coins for the ANA for over 10 years. He was also a grader for NGC. The Senior grader, Randy Campbell has been around for 30 something years grading coins. He is at many of the large shows grading. Great guy and fun to talk with. The next guy is Skip something. He came from ANACS. I think he has 40 years in the business. He was an authenticator for the ANA for ages. I would trust them to catch almost any fakes but grade a point or so high.
