Welcome! I am partial to that design. It is a bullion coin, so fingerprints will not effect the value too much.
Hi Pat, welcome to Coin Talk. Both of my Krause catalogs mention that dates from 1907 to 1914 where officially restruck. Your type of coin was struck from 1899 to 1906 with the edge inscription: Dieu Protege La France. From 1906 to 1914 the edge inscription reads: Liberte Egalite Fraternite. The 1906 coinage had both inscriptions. I have this years Krause catalog the 36th edition and the price listed for your coin in UNC conditions is $200 and in BU $325. Remember these are only catalog prices, market prices may be different. Lou
Thanks so much everyone - you have been ever so helpful. I am enjoying reading these forums which are filled with kind and smart people. It's fun hanging out here even with my one coin Wishing all a happy and healthy 2009
Well it still has the intrinsic gold value. Just don't try to make it better. Raw gold should be put in a protective holder. "rubbed it by mistake"? Don't beat him up too badly now. I would say it's still worth $145 or more.
Well - he didn't admit to rubbing it at all! I think he was trying to be careful and thought the his nose rag was better than his fingers It is in a protective holder where it should have stayed..lol Pat
fake 1905 gold rooster coins? i have in my possesion a 20fcs 1905 gold rooster coin,it's been in my family for generation's,a few weeks ago i went to 2 local jewelrs in my city to see what it might be worth, both of them placed the coin on weight measurer and did some chemical test both of them said that my coin is lighter then the other rooster coins that they have and also that the chemical test couldn't show if its really gold, the results are weird(in their own words).here are pictures of the cooin its 21mm in diameter and also my grandmother when she got the coin had a ring welded on the edge of the coin so that she would wear it on a traditional neckless that they wore in her time(1930-1940).can anybody based on the pictures tell me if my coin is real or is it fake? thank you a lot
Can't tell for sure, but it kind of looks like it's fake. If the jewelers both said it's light and the gold test did not work - then it is almost certainly a fake.
the said that they are not sure, the result's were strange, they said it might be real but it also might be fake, the size is right 21mm its just that the weight is a little smaller then the normal weight
I have read through this topic and I have to correct some of the findings in here, based on the 2 leading catalogs for French coins (Gadoury and Le Franc). The 20 francs 1905 rooster should be a coin of 90% gold with a total weight of approximately 6.45161 grams. 9.158.132 pieces were minted of this coin. The edge is lettered with the text *++* DIEU *+PROTEGE+*LA FRANCE and this text should be in position B (legend is readable if the rooster is on top). Catalog values: Gadoury catalog: SUP-58: 270 euro, FDC: 320 euro Le Franc catalog: SPL-63: 200, FDC:300 (SUP-58 is comparable to AU-58, SPL-63 to MS-63 and FDC to MS-65) Concerning the counterfeiting and reminted pieces: no official reminting is done on this type, only on the type of 1907 tot 1914 (with another edge lettering and legend) a reminting was done in gold that was more red than the original one (due to a higher content of cupper). The catalogs warn for counterfeited pieces, but these counterfeits were made in the age of minting with the correct content and weight of gold. The piece that was mounted on a ring to use as a medallion looks very fake to me. This is supported by scientific data since it is not possible to solder a ring to gold! The only way to work with gold pieces is to put them in some kind of holding device or to fully melt the pieces and created something new of it.
ass it turns out my coin is made of 14k gold,so it is not an original rooste coin,a jewel did a chemical test,it is 14 k gold and my coin acording to the weight is worth about 100eur
