I have read a lot of posts here about buying different coins and which to invest in for the best gain. My question is why do you collect coins?
I collect for the fun of it....I collect because I like making full sets....and I always like it when I make money. Just a few days ago I found a coin that is a low mintage....lots of people will want it down the road and they are cheap...I'm not going to tell what the date is but its a silver dollar---so I'm buy some....call it an investment if you want but I also want the coin because of the low mintage so I'm collecting it! Mainly for fun and trying to make full sets! But the "for fun" part is a lot less expansive than the "to make full sets" one... :desk: Max
I'm about 2/3 investor and 1/3 collector. I've never attempted to complete a set. I am always on the lookout for something that is reasonably high quality and substantially underpriced with the idea that I can enjoy the coin now, and perhaps sell it someday at a profit to a pure collector. Speedy's post above is mysteriously interesting. We'll have to find a way to get him to tell us whether it is a 1996 silver eagle or some older coin.
Im just in this for fun right now, maybe later I might get into making a profit off of this, but for now I just want to have fun and learn.
It's the thrill of the hunt that I'm after. I love to go to the bank, and find a full roll of silver halves, happened to me twice today, 2 times yesterday, and 5 times the day before, NO JOKE!
Interesting poll - I like collecting for the fun of it, but I want complete sets. Yet the only complete sets I have are moderns. Actually how do you define complete sets - to me it is a date set, but to others it might mean all varieties and mint marks!! And the only people who will make money off of them is who ever inherits the collection.
