I had a couple cool things happen today at the bank, so I thought I'd share. First, I went to the bank and got $200 in half dollars, then made a withdrawal and the teller told me that she had something real special for me, she then whipped out a 1966 $100 red seal note, in pretty good condition. I've never kept any paper money before, but this one's in pretty nifty, so I'll keep 'er. So I got home, popped open the my 20 rolls of halves, out of the 20 rolls, I had 5 complete rolls of 1965-1969, no 70's, but I'll take it. I went back to the bank to give them back my extra change and halves. My bank has a coin counting machine that I drop my coins in, then when it is all done counting, it prints off a receipt and I take it to the teller. For some reason the machine wasn't taking one of my halves. I printed off my receipt and took it to the teller, along w/the coin that wouldn't go. After looking at it for a little while, she said it was fake. She took a real half and banged it on the desk, then took the fake and banged it on the desk, sounded just like plastic. I asked her if I could keep the fake, and she said I could. So, right now I have a 1972-D half dollar that looks real, except for the fact that when you bang it on something it sounds plastic. I'll post pics tomorrow. I thought it was pretty cool because it was the first one that I'd found, do you guys know of what it might be worth. I'm guessing nothing, but it looks like the real deal.
Nice work at the bank! I've got to go to my bank and get some halves to search through, probably on Saturday.... As for the supposed counterfeit, well, it's technically illegal to sell a counterfeit, but I can tell you that I would find it valuable, if for no other reason than its an oddity! ~AJM
Yea, I was surprised that the lady at the bank gave it bank to me, but I think that it's awesome, I mean I would of never know, I'll post a picture later on of it.
Yeah, I'd like to see it. My coin shop dealer has a BOXFUL of counterfeit stuff - everything from 1944-d cents turned into 1914-d's to plastic stuff, to a Morgan Dollar he picked up today that feels like it's made of lead, and looks even worse! There's absolutely NO QUESTION it's a fake! Lots of paper forgeries, too. Washed $5's turned into $50's or $100's and a boatload of counterfeit $20's. (Well, Phoenix, AZ IS one of the top ten in the country for counterfeiters!)
Can't wait to see the "fake" one---I doubt that the tellers at banks are too up on fake coins so there is a chance she was wrong---maybe you have an error or something. If you can I would suggest taking it to a dealer and seeing if he could weigh it for you can tell you the weight. Speedy
Ok here's the counterfeit. I also found a 1972 proof (there's no "s") and it has an edge that makes it look to be silver. I found a couple of other weirds, but here's the fake. The pics are just of the coin flipped over vertically, I DIDN'T rotate it when I took them.....Paul The coin itsn't toned, it just came out like that on my scanner, I'll try to take some with my digital.
when you drop a regular coin it makes that ding noise. When I drop this coin, it sounds like to is plastic. If you have ever had those chocolate candies shapped like coins, with the foil on the outside, and dropped those, that's what it kinda sounds like.
The proof one was the one with the silver edge, I don't have any pics of that one yet. So do you guys think this is fake, because I sure can't tell.
before we can say if its fake or not we would need to know the weight. It could be an off metal error but that is a small chance. Speedy
There is a slim chance that this coin was struck on a foreign planchet, but I would be more inclined to guess that there is some kind of internal planchet defect which is not visible to the naked eye. Regardless, cool coin!
the coin is genuine. however, there is something wrong with the planchet... its either wrong planchet or some internal error, exactly as TOLS196024 said
Ok, well that's cool. I'm going to my local shop today to see what they think, and to see if they can weigh it. I'll let you guys know what they say.
