I've seen these going on eBay for about $2.00 per roll plus shipping. Assuming I can get my hand on a few boxes, are these rolls worth hanging on to? I mean if people are paying $2.00 per roll now is it possible for the price to go up years down the road?

With the smallest mintage just shy of 2 billion, I would say hold on the them, maybe your great, great, great grand kids would profit from them, too many minted, and I'm sure, too many held from circulation for them to be a real profit builder in our lifetime.

I had similar thoughts but don't really collect cents so I was wondering what the cent collectors thought.

I think original rolls will continue to carry a small premium. Maybe in 50 to 100 years they will sell for $3 a roll. I think that those that remain in the wild will die from zinc rot within 5 or 10 years, though.

Why not go to a bank and get them to order some boxes? I just can't see paying a premium for rolls of shield cents. Then again I am not a modern cent collector.

That was my idea from the get go. My back can get me some boxes so at $25 a pop, if they were worth hanging onto, I was going to get a few. The idea sprung from seeing people buying these rolls for around 3 times their worth or more.

What is zinc rot? Are you saying just sitting rolled in a box, the metal will break down on it's own?

I think new issues are hot for a brief period. Before they hit everywhere.
Of course, it could end up being a low mintage... like 2009 nickels and dimes.
    But with cents? Not likely.
