http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/3871/dsc00564gx6.jpg http://img385.imageshack.us/img385/9900/dsc00565ql8.jpg I got it from my grandfather's collection and was labeled under the RARE COINS section of his collection. Coin is very worn down on front, but you can tell some details such as Liberty, the face of the woman and her hair flowing back a bit. Has what looks like bars around the edge. Date is gone, due to coin being worn down so heavily. Back seems to be in good condition, except for the Of in The United States of America, the back is good condition, all vines, 1 over 100 fraction and One Cent are all clearly visible. Not sure about date OR worth, if you could tell me, that would be a great help! Thanks
I think it's impossible to tell the exact date because It's so worn and badly corroded but you could get a closer pic of the date..that would help. B12
I am sorry, my camera only goes about that close, it just becomes a blur when you get closer. From looking at it extremely closely from my eyes, I think i see the number 4 as a faint remnant of the date there. Here's a pic of where the 4 appears to be (red arrow pointing to it), i dont know if its where the date even belongs: http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/9955/dsc00564gx6zm3.jpg Thanks for the years though. Now what's it worth? $.50?
It's not even worth that until you can prove it is genuine. With a coin like this, in that condition, it must be authenticated.
You mean send it to PCGS or NGC or somewhere? That costs quite a bit and takes some time to get it back...i guess i could
It appears to me to have drapery , It cant be a 4 nor can it be a Strawberry variety for just that reason alone. If its real - It may be worth $20 bucks or a bit more in that condition- on thE- Bay Here is my AG 1798 to compare to - Bonediggers-- his is a bit nicer than mine
Something that may help you on focusing a picture is to put a magnifying glass in front of the camera. It's a commonly use because it really does help. B12
I have a 1798 and what was labeled 1800/1799 restruck date when I bought it..How someone determined that is beyond me but I have labeled it as such.
after looking at it under a microscope almost, it is indeed a 1796-er, thanks for the feedback anyways
Prometheus, If you do decide to get it graded, make sure you send it to either NCS or ANACS, as I don't think any of the other grading services will put it in a holder.
I'm not too sure how old your digital camera is. If your camera is less than 3 years old, chances are that it should have some sort of macro function, which is usually denoted as a "flower" sign. Improving the lighting would greatly help if you can do it.
Mikjo0, Some early American coin experts can identify a Variety by the Die pairs, if there are any markers that are identifiable! Frank
who provided you with the strawberry leaf designation? That is an exceptionally rare variety of 1793 cent that has only 4 known coins. The last one to sell at auction brought $414,000. Looking at your coin the LIBERTY font is too large and the berries on the reverse wreath rule out that particular variety, so I'm just curious how you came up with that designation.
