Hello again! Despite joking around about hoping to find interesting coins earlier today, I was given a box of pennies as a birthday gift today and decided to search through some rolls. I've only been going at coin collection(only pennies) for about a week now but it seems as though I stumbled across a genuine 1909 Wheat Penny. While it is in considerably rough condition, and thus the value is virtually gone, I was more looking for both opinions of grade and whether anyone had input as to if it was genuine or not. Thanks much! Mike
From the pics it appears to be genuine. It is considerably worn and does have that hole/dent in it so I would assume it has very little value. Maybe a dollar or 2. Id still hang onto it tho.
Nice find! Check http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/dietype.php?date=1909&die_mint=p&die_type=dr&page=0 out to see if your might be a DDR
I don't think there would be much of a reason to counterfeit that coin, so it's likely genuine, low grade, for sure a keeper. Those are the coins they use to create counterfeits with, by adding an S mintmark.
I agree. If someone were to counterfeit this they would an S mint mark and VDB on the reverse bottom. To the OP: Even though yours has some damage, at 11 o'clock, it's worth holding on to.
Not to hijack the thread, but this statement had me wondering. Are there any wheats that CT members don't hang on to? I hang on to any wheat I get. A 1958D with a hole in it, covered in yellow paint, I'd hang on to. Even though it's worth nada (2.5 cents, actually).
One of my favorite wheat cents is a 1947-S that was ground down to the diameter of a dime. It was my first wheatie found metal detecting.
looks genuine, and is a hard date to find in circulation. The oldest penny I've found in circulation is 1910 in G-4...worth about $.35
And I took nothing negative by what you said either. All is good, no worries :thumb: BTW, what part of Michigan?
