I just went on eBay and searched "1913 Type 1" under Buffalo Nickels 1913-1919, and went to Advanced and specified under $50 BIN, and found this:http://www.ebay.com/itm/1913-Type-1...Individual&hash=item3cc6fe34c2#ht_2287wt_1397
Some nice looking coins posted here! I searched for a few that have some stronger strikes on the obverse. Thoughts on these? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1913-D-TYPE-1-BUFFALO-NICKEL-TONED-UNCIRCULATED-CONDITION-SEMI-KEY-DATE-/200769553458?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item2ebecc4432 Or this: Looks like it is a sharp strike on the obverse, but it is flat above the braid: http://www.ebay.com/itm/CHOICE-SHARP-GEM-BU-MS-UNC-LUSTER-1913-Type-1-BUFFALO-INDIAN-NICKEL-FREE-S-H-/380437025255?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item5893d051e7 or this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/SHARP-CRISP-BU-MS-UNCIRCULATED-1913-Type-1-BUFFALO-NICKEL-FREE-S-H-First-Year-/380442429072?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item589422c690
ngs - The 2nd and 3rd coins you linked there have no where near the strike that the 1st does. And based on those pics, I don't even think 2 & 3 are MS.
I posted the 2nd and 3rd Ebay links to see if I was missing something on them.. Guess not, they are not full strikes. #1 is certainly promising. Good strike, little over budget, but not enough to kill the deal. Other thoughts on #1 ebay link posted?
Here's mine, if it helps. I paid $23 for it, and the toning is getting better. (I have two different sizes, so if you enlarge one it will be bigger than the other) (also, I have progressively gotten worse at coin photography. This was my first attempt at it) (think I used enough smileys?)
This is the one I would get if I was buying one 1913 Type I. Personally out of all of them you have posted I did not like any of them as uncirculated. None of the dealers I typically use have any in stock except the one I posted.
I would like to thank everyone for their replies in this thread. I will be able to take this information and use it to make an informed purchase. Thanks!
If I might offer this bit of advice: I'd wait, and spend a bit more. A $50 type I 1913 is a fairly common coin and will never be on par with coins like Coin Dexter posted. You can spend just a bit more (maybe double) and get a coin that is spectacular in eye appeal. This will bring you more pride, pleasure and best of all, when you go to sell, a much better price sold for. So many times when I began collecting I was more focused on completing the set rather than on the quality of the coins within. I'd rather have an incomplete set with spectacular coins than a complete set of average coins. I believe that many would agree.
I would definitely wait for a fully struck and most lustrous one. But, of the three, the second has the best detail IMHO.
I picked this one up for about $100.00.... PCGS MS-64....I think it's way under graded JMO but I know for a fact I can sell it for about 4X what I paid for it as I have had offers for about 4X what I paid for it....
