2006 Mint Set Quarter Error? Hello all, I'm new to coin collecting and picked up a couple of mint sets from the mint store mainly just to get the Sac's... thats what I collect. So I thought I'd sell the packs of 50-state quarters and after I photographed them I noticed the North Dakota had 3 sections of staining, so here's what it looks like... http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/6335/mintset1ai6.jpg http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/8536/flawedquarter1qm8.jpg Of the 3 darker sections; in front of G's nose, from his ear back, and across the DOLLAR, the DOLLAR part shows pitting. Does this make the set worthless? I was only looking to get a few bucks from some 50-state collector to feed my SAC habit. Thanks for your help and a great forum (esp. the threads on the Ebay seller/grader SGS... saved me some $$$!)
vanwag, It appears that there may be some sort of toning but also appears to be several areas where a clad peel occurred. Clad peel apparently occurs when the planchet is still too hot and soft when entering the striking chamber and when struck, some of the cladding sticks to the much colder Dies and is lifted from the surface of the coin. To some the set might be considered worthless as it is a bit distracting to the eye appeal! However, there are others that would consider this as an error and the set more valuable as long as all of the coins are intact in the set! Frank
Frank, thanks for your reply.... yes its stilll sealed in the mint cellophane. Maybe some one will still buy it!
