PCGS - crossover ?

I have several pieces which are certified, and I'm considering sending them to PCGS for crossover.

    They are in two categories:

    1) Slabbed by lower tier services and almost certainly overgraded - they are currently slabbed by NTC and NNC as Mint States - MS63s and MS64s. I think one is probably AU58 and the others MS60+. PCGS allows one to opt for a "minimum acceptable crossover grade", so I have put those lower grades on the PCGS form.

These are decent pieces - common date $5 indian / liberty, $10 Indian, and a trade dollar.

Why send 'em in ? b/c I bought these early on, when I first got back into the hobby. I didn't know much about the grading services, and felt I was getting a bargain.

I now buy exclusively top-tier slabs, and want to have one unified set, so I'm comparing apples to apples. Also, I think top-tier slabs are more legit on the market when it comes time to sell.

Do you think PCGS will cross 'em ?

    2) Slabbed by NGC - These are nice pieces - 19th century proofs (3c silver MS63 cameo, seated lib 10c MS64 cameo). I want to maintain that grade or higher.

Why send 'em in ? I respect NGC greatly, but when it comes to very small pieces, I much prefer the PCGS packaging. Plus, PCGS requires at least 5 pieces for submission. Also, these are very nice and may move up a grade.

Anybody have any experience in that area ?

Do they ever increase the grade of an NGC piece ?

Here are a few pics of the NGC pieces...

Thanks for sharing any experience you may have.

Post photos of the ones that are in off brand slabs...if you send them in make sure you crack them out of the slabs they are in---if you don't they might lower the grade because of that.

I would leave the NGC slabs alone....they are just fine and NGC is tops IMHO--

ahhhh.... So it's best to NOT crossover, but rather crack 'em out and submit 'em as raw coins ?

The reason I didn't want to do that is that if PCGS returns 'em in a body bag, they would still be encapsulated if I submit as crossover.

But it sounds like I'm likely to get a higher grade if submitted as raw...

If I submit as raw, there's only one reason PCGS won't encapsulate... they consider 'em "problem" coins.

If I submit as crossover, there's two reasons PCGS won't encapsulate... they consider 'em "problem" coins *-or-* they don't meet my minimum grade.

So, if I'm confident they aren't problem coins, my crossover idea kinda dooms itself to a lower grade... and my "minimum grade" idea opens up the possibility of spending money and getting no value at all, if PCGS thinks my minimum is too high.

So... why try to protect myself with the "minimum crossover grade" thing...

Does that rambling make any sense ?

I would crack them out and send them in as raw coins with no min. grade set....the coins will be graded right so if you overgraded them they will come back graded right you can either crack them out or leave them be.

I agree with Speedy. It seems most people have more luck when they crack them out. In this case, you wouldn't specify a minimum grade. They're going to keep your money either way.

If you don't want to end up receiving a raw coin back because of a body bag (like the NGC stuff), leave it in the slab and specify a minimum grade. If you're confident on your grading skills, I do think you have better luck submitting raw coins.

For myself, I'm not skilled enough to play the crackout game!
