Recently I discovered a 1964 quarter and I decided to go through my spare change to see if I had anything else interesting. I found this 1946 nickel with a strange rim around the edge. It looks like it might be something a collector would put on it to protect it or something. I really have no idea. The nickel is also really heavy, which has to be caused by the metal edge. The text on the nickel is also a little weird. It stands out more, which is weird because it's my oldest nickel. The text also seems to be raised higher than normal. I have several nickels, slightly newer, that have more normal looking text. There is also no mint mark thing on it as far as I can tell, which if I remember correctly means it's from PA? I attached some pics I think.
:welcome: to CT. Actually, that was put around the coin to use as a piece of jewelry, more likely. Collectors, and dealers, would not use something made of steel to protect a coin. We use 2x2 cardboard flips, mylar flips, and for those who want it, they submit their coins to a TPG, or third party grader, who will grade then holder the coin in a protective slab.
ok, that makes sense. any idea why anyone would want to make it into jewelry? Also, how would I find out what mint it's from? thanks
There is no telling what appeals to some people. Many, many have buffalo nickels in bezels to wear (a kind of manly thing), so this is just one of those. If the bezel were put on while it was a fairly new coin, it would have protected it somewhat from wear.
