Obviously its 1834 and mexican but outside of that I have no idea what it is and if its worth anything.Hope pics come out ok 002.jpg 003.jpg it says G(and what looks like a c in middle of it)1834.P.J.10Ds20Gs.it does look like at one time someone tried to put a hole in it.

1834 silver coin in Whats it worth?

I posted yesterday with pictures of a coin I have had for awhile. I had actually posted it in Whats It Worth but wondered if I should have posted it here instead.

    Hello Jsmbdl,

I looked at the other thread to see the pictures. What I can say with a fair amount of certainty is that you have an 1834 Mexican 8 real silver coin. There are several different minor variations in design for this type of coin.

Here is one in much better condition than yours selling on ebay for $65.(well, at least they are trying to sell it) See link below.

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/MEXICO-SILVER-COIN-8-REALES-KM-377-8-VF-1834-Go-PJ-/280869448284?pt=US_World_Coins&hash=item41651faa5c

Also, these coins are 90.3% silver and should weigh 27.07 grams which calculates to .7859 ounces of pure silver which translates to roughly $22 worth of silver.

Even with the hole in it, I imagine a collector of the series may still be willing to pay $25-30 for it.

    Regards,

    -Kurt

    That is a nice find!

The "Go" is the Mexican mint of Guanajuato.
The "PJ" is the mint assayer, a mint official.

These coins circulated in Mexico and the USA for a long time and some are quite "used".

    :)

Why did you brother not think it was real?

Your suspicions were correct - this is not a genuine coin.

This is a debased contemporary counterfeit, made in very low purity silver during the time when the original coins would be in circulation.
This particular one appears to be Riddell #309. There are many variations for this mint and year.

The good news is that it's worth $25-$30 if you can find a collector specializing in contemporary counterfeits.
