IF YOU STORE YOUR COINS IN 2X2'S WITH STAPLES, USE PLIERS TO FLATTEN THEM DOWN! Im sure the old vets will laugh at this, but i had to learn the hard way. and now i need to replace two franklin proofs. only plastic 2x2 holders for me from here on out, and only taped shut.
Or just buy the small staplers that flatten the staples when you staple the 2x2s closed. http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/max-flat-clinch-ergonometric-stapler.html
The ONLY way to go!! :welcome: Just kidding of course.. use smaller staples! Oh and lighten up on the air pressure!!
I bought several coins from a dealer at a show last weekend and most all of the 2x2's had staple issues. The coins weren't scratched, but the staple ends were sharp. I don't mean just rough, I mean a good way to cut your finger sharp. Asked him to flatten them so I could take them home without them getting scratched up by contact.
I've tried those. They staple flat, but still leave a tiny gap between the staple and the paper, which is still sharp. I use pliers and flatten them into the cardboard, the point of the staple is recessed into the cardboard, eliminating the chance of the point scratching. If I wasn't such a tightwad, I would just use self-adhesive 2x2s.
I use pliers to flatten down the staples. I would not use tape, because of the glue used. The tape is to close to the coin and the glue fumes could migrate into the coin area. No holder are totally problem free.
So is the damage happening when adding the coin to the 2x2 or removing them from the 2x2? I dont have any, so this is an honest question, sorry if it sounds dumb. If you put a coin in 2x2, and dont flatten the staples, how does the coin then get damaged, the staples dont reach the coin surface do they? Or is it mutiple 2x2's damaging each other when stacked togeather?
When I replied to this thread in Post #9, I was referring to multiple 2x2's damaging each other when stacked or placed in a 2x2 storage box and they were touching each other.
Fyi one of the firsts coins' i had was an AGE and it was in an 2x2 and i scratched it up trying to get it out. Since then i have stuck with Air Tites'
Linesman Pliers should be on every coin collectors desk. The width of a typical linesman plier along with a serrated jaw easily fits over staples and cinches them deep into the cardboard 2x2's perfectly. Cinch Staplers are good but they don't always get the staple below the surface, ....at least the 2 I have don't/
I also don't understand how the ends of staples sticking out damages the coin inside. The only thing I've had it damage is the plastic pages when I'm trying to take it out and it gets caught.
You need to get those staple flat to use the vinyl binder pages also. Keeps them from hooking the plastic.
If the staples aren't flat on the 2x2, and you store them in a binder in the 20 coin pages, the raised part of the staple can rub against the sheets beneath it in the binder and cause a depression in that coin. Same thing can happen if the 2x2s are stored in a box.
