Just bought an 1899 unc Morgan today. Its a great looking coin and I think I got it for a decent price. When I left the store I went on eBay to look at completed listings for a rough value of the coin. I could only find one listing, completed or still running, for an 1899-P and it was ending in 3 hrs. It was certified by NGC as "unc details" and "improperly cleaned obverse" and the high bid was $150, and I know that wasn't accurate. So I was wondering what the value of my coin might be, I know it is impossible to tell w/o pics. Lets just say its MS62, which it is at least, and it is probably 1-3 points higher. Its got tons of luster, barely any bag marks and some light caramel/raspberry toning around the edges on obv and rev. Given that description, what do you all think a fair market value for my Morgan might be? I will try to post pics asap.
Please post pictures, as I find it hard to believe that NGC was that wrong in blowing the grade of a Morgan as "details." when it is really MS. They generally get that one right--sometimes they might over or under grade, but "improperly cleaned?" That is a pretty easy call for a TPG. If your 1899 were truly MS (and from what you say, I have some doubts), then it would be worth $250-400, depending on grade, eye appeal, etc. I have two MS 1899 coins and that is a tough date--the prices are fairly high for them. If it is cleaned, then you got what you paid for it--$55 seems proper for a details coin of that date. There is a doubt. Sorry to be so direct, but NGC is a pretty good company at determining cleaned coins, and if they say "cleaned-details," chances are that they are right. You got the coin on E-bay and never saw it, so you can't examine it closely under magnification to rule out an improperly cleaned obverse. Sorry, but probably true.
I think the OP is referring to the Details coin as an example and his coin is raw. Correct me if I am mistaken.
This is my PCGS MS 63 for comparison purposes--this one is a $330-350 dollar coin today. Without pictures, it is impossible to tell.
Sorry if I was unclear but the Morgan I bought was raw and original, not cleaned no problems, pure MS. The only one I could find on eBay was the "improperly cleaned" one. And I'm pretty sure NGC got that right. I was just surprised to see $150. I don't know the values of specific dates of Morgans. I just saw it was a real surprised to such a high price for what I assumed was a common date at $55. It was a great looking coin and I thought the price was good, but now I know I got a steal! I will now def post a pic asap bc this coin is totally original and has tremendous eye appeal in my opinion. Thanks for the feed back on my limited description everyone.
Okay gotcha. Sorry, thought you were questioning an NGC cleaned coin. My bad. Compare your coin to the one above, which is an average mint state. Look carefully at the luster, and look for signs of breaks in it. Also, look at the feathers on the reverse and the cap on Ms Liberty. Are they clear? Also, look for strike marks, and nicks on the obverse particularly--feel free to use mine as an example.
That's all I can do now for pics. If more detail is needed to assess it properly I can give it a scan when I get a chance
It's an 1889 and not an 1899 which changes the whole value game... sorry.. Still a nice coin but, closer to the price you paid.. I can't tell a grade from those images.
Yes, that coin is a common date, and worth what you paid for it. It definitely does NOT look uncirculated from the picture--looks AU to me as well. 1889 is not a particularly glamorous date for Morgans--ordinary common date coin PCGS price guide for 1899:

1899 MS + 165 - 210 - 255 - 270 270 300 305 335 350 445 500 900 1,100 2,250 3,000 8,500

PCGS price guide for 1889:

1889 MS + ▼30 - ▼30 - ▼31 - ▼31 ▼31 52 53 66 68 ▼88 ▼113 375 450 1,400 3,200 18,500 22,50

So, about $31 for an AU, and 52 for a low level MS. Unfortunately, this has some noticeable wear in the hairline, and on the eagles breast, bagmark hit on Liberty's cheek. AU, and the date is 1889 which is around $45 in AU58.
