Hopefully that photo shows up okay. The coin was actually slabbed by NGC as an MS 61. Most of you all got that right! I was scared the coin actually looked high AU with a little bit of wear in the hair. I just bought this coin slabbed already for $195.00 which isn't too bad in my opinion. Thanks so much everyone. Feel free to comment if you think it was a good price or not
That was a good buy. I paid $270 for a 63 recently in a PCGS holder, and $300 for a 64 in a PCGS holder about 5 years ago. There was no way that coin was circulated. The Philly mint had many more coins jammed into bags than some of the other mints--storage space was more limited, from legends and stories I have read over the years. The bags made contact with each other, and the coins were often moved from one storage cabinet to another in the bank vaults as well. Lots more nicks on many Philly coins of that vintage, and one tends to see a lot of conditional rarities from the later Morgans (except for 1921, of course). Yours looked immediately like a lower level MS.
I've been grading Morgans on and off for nearly 50 years, and that coin is, as many others have observed by now, at least a 61, probably a 62. I think the scrape on the cheek by itself would preclude a higher grade. 63s are generally devoid of such marks on major design elements. And I really want to be in line when BUncirculated sells off the VG-Fs that he has that look like this one!!! P.S.: Ooops! Realized too late that the OP had resolved the grade issue. On a better day, I still think it could have gone 62, but it's hard to argue too much with the 61.
